I agree with the new codex chaos lost alot of character and the HQ's lost alot of power with the loss of the armoury and all the gifts and such, but they did powerup alot of the troops, thousand sons and shoot down almost anything and take some of the heaviest fire in the game and death guard...

Usualy these weapons cuased D3/D6 wounds after armour saves so you,d take an armour save and then role to see how many wounds the weapon causes so against a on wound model Id say it would cause one wound.
