"What the hell is going on?!" roared Lenk. The holo image before him flashed red as the previous triumphant charge of the infantry started turning into a massacre. There was a clatter as the servitors inputted the data from the sentry towers. In moments a nearly previously clear field was now cover in a mass of enemy icons.
"Well over twenty thousand Orks," Bethnar said frantically reading through the incoming reports, "including heavy and assault infantry, bikes and trucks and dreadnoughts, or their versions of them."
"Recall them!!" bellowed Lenk to one of the vox officers but Bethnar shook his head,
"It's too late sir. That bastard had it all planned. They've deployed a holding force behind the line using their transports. If anything that force is stronger than those in front of the line. They consist of some of the most heavily armoured troops, no doubt to ensure they can't retreat though a small group of them are starting to assault head towards the Alpha Gate."
"What is the status of the Alpha Gate?" Lenk asked, his face a mask of worry.
"Closed but not yet secured, as to enable a fast retreat if necessary."
"Secure it." Bethnar turn in shock, his face grey,
"But sir, if we secure it there will be no way we can open in time if any of our troops make it through, surely...."
"I said secure it! We can't risk it being breached. Do want to loose the city? "
"But-"
"That is an order Bethnar! Question me again and you will be charged with treason." The atmosphere in the strategium was tense, both men matching glares but finally Bethnar lowered his head.
"As you command Milord."

General Vosklar has just heard from the sentry tower when Darius's vox came through. Swearing he grabbed hold of his comms officer,
"Sound the alert! I want this lot ready to move out in five minutes!" Nodding nervously the young man sat down as the General responded to the Colonel.
"I've just heard Darius. Aim all the damn firepower you can at the bastards between our men and the gate, if anyone questions you tell them to speak to me. I'll speak to Lenk." Not waiting for a response he voxed through to command.
"Milord Lenk. This is General Vosklar, I have just been informed of the situation. I anticipation of your orders we are preparing to move out-"
"Belay that," Lenk's voice interrupted. Vosklar stopped in suprise, sure he had heard wrong,
"Repeat?" he queried.
"I said belay that. You are to hold your position," Lenk ordered.
"But they're getting massacred out there!" Vosklar shouted into the vox, "we need to open the Alpha Gate and deploy the rest of my armour. We can cut through and create a path of retreat-"
"I said hold your position General. We can't risk opening the Alpha Gate, it is being secured as we speak. Do you-" Vosklar shut it off in disgust as his men looked at him. He knew the were expecting him to do something. Vosklar had grown up in this city, had been here a long time before Lenk had showed up, and in many ways the men respected him more that the off worlder.
"Fuck it," he spat, "tell the men to move into position Beta42. We're going out whether that bastard likes it nor not."
Five minutes later the rumble of over a hundred tanks headed by a massive Baneblade shook the main street.
"Sir, incoming vox from Lenk," the comms officer said looking up, "what should I do?"
"Ignore it," Vosklar replied, "by the time he can do anything about it we'll be outside." Drawing up to the massive Alpha Gate he was plain it was being secured as massive adamantium rods started to slowly shoot home.
"Patch me through to the gate control room," Vosklar ordered. After a moment a rough if slightly nervous if rough sounding voice came through.
"General Vosklar. I should advise you know I have orders from Lenk not to open this gate."
"I thought you would Lieutenant, but you know I've got to go through them. Our men, our brothers are getting killed out there."
"I know sir, but I can't. I can't risk the city." Vosklar slammed his hand onto the arm of his chair in anger,
"I will ask you again, open the gates." There was a pause before the reply came back though,
"No Sir." Leaving the vox on Vosklar turned to the main gunner.
"Target the control tower." The gunner looked up in alarm,
"Sir?"
"Do it." The panicked voice of the Lieutenant came back over the vox,
"You can't do this! You wouldn't-"
"I can and I will," Vosklar replied in a low cold voice, "I would quite happily kill a coward like you to save the brave men fighting outside. You've got five seconds."
"But-"
"Four."
"-I can't-"
"Three."
"Stop!"
"Two"
"Ok! Ok! I'll open it," the Lieutenant gave in. Looking out Vosklar could see the locks slowing before starting to reverse and open.
"Thank you," he said sincerely, before voxing a broadcast to the rest of the tanks.
"This is Vosklar. What we are about to do is against orders and probably suicidal. But I know you all. I know you are honourable and loyal to your fellow man. I know unlike that bastard Lenk you, like me, would prefer to go out fighting, trying to save those brave souls out there, than hide in here like cowards." A deafening roar of approval fed back through the vox, bringing a wry grin to the generals face.
"You know what to do. Don't get sloppy out there. We go out, grab them and bring them home. Keep the chimera's covered and watch each others back."
With a throaty roar the tanks revved their engines as the massive gates before them slowly started to open.
