So what is 9th edition going to be like?

AoS is going to be an entry level skirmish game to 9th edition. Most probably a box'ed set like the Island of blood set. Containing 2 Forces. The rumoured 'sigmarite' warriors and a force to oppose them (Not yet known). They want people to eventually participate in large scale battles. Though this way they lower the entry cost for people who want to get started on WHFB (wich I think is a good thing!)
-> slightly the same as mordheim ala 40k skirmish

Plans for the future of 9th edition?

Most likely more releases that will move players (if they want to) to larger scale battles as we know them from 8th edition.

Round / square / rectangle / oval / whatever kind of bases?

Round bases have been seen/rumoured for the skirmisch entry game.
Square bases, as we know them, will not become obsolete and will still be available. People will likely be able to chose on what they want to mount their models.
Possibility to rank up round bases to participate in large scale 8th edition like battles -> doable, LotR already has movement trays for that.

Older models / army books?

8th edition books/units will not become obsolete. Will be updated much like they always have. (some perhaps slower than others)
Joined Forces might very well still exist.

Breakdown of available units

Models that will be available in store -> models that sell on a regular base and are known to GW to sell very good. Thus stores are meant to keep a stock of these models at all times.

Models available on pre-order / web exclusive -> models that GW does not have laying around in abundance. They make them as orders come in.

Thats all that I know as far as 9th edition goes.

@Archamedius Not directly from GW.
I do not claim that any of this is the official info, straight from the source, cause only GW knows this.
It is the 'unofficial' confirmations coming from one of their distributors.

One of their distributors who is wrong about at least the 8th ed armybooks, which will be pulled from sale on June 26th as per the GW website.

Best case scenario is that we're looking at Ravening Hordes 2.0. But who knows.

Say what now?

I assume your comment was implying that only competitive players are going to be bothered by the changes.

It's actually rumoured that we are getting a ravening hordes type list that does invalidate the older books.

while this would make me sad faced, it would answer once and for all which armies if any are getting squatted. If they are not mentioned in Ravening Hordes, then they are out.

@logan054 Nope. I meant those books and rules you already have don't go anywhere just because they aren't supported anymore. Non-tournament players will be happy to play 8th/ET games post AoS if they're anything like the guys around here.

@I'm with Adam on this one. You've always been able to play older editions, there won't be a GW police stopping you. The reason why people haven't been doing this is that the editions keep getting better and better (contrary to what the nay-sayers on the interwebz want you to believe) :)

I can only speak from personally experience, but I've never meet anyone wanting to play a previous edition. I can't say I agree that every edition has gotten better, different yes, I think each has it own appeal, 8th certainly has it's charm.

So does anyone else have a sinking feeling that the rules for 9th will be spread over several releases? Like, Age of Sigmar will be a skirmish game only, and after that another release for regimental battles?

Which is your opinion, mate. :-)

The reason people don't play with older editions that they prefer is because there is no support for them. There are no events scheduled for 5th edition games for example nor can you expect to go to your club and get a pickup game with your zoats or whatever. People are limited to casual play among their friends who are fine with older edition games and that's it.

I had the chance to spend about 20 minutes with the upcoming book Age of Sigmar by A. Lanning (a novel, not the game) that deals with the aftermath of the end times. The prologue makes it very clear that Sigmar survives and the whole plot takes place after the end times. Nothing that I have read suggests that there is any time travel involved. It is just a continuation of the story on a much broader scale. I think it is safe to say that the game of the same name follows the story of book and doesn't establish a totally different setting.

In the prologue Sigmar survives and pulls the winds of magics through the gap into the warp. In the process the pure untouched currents of the warp are tainted with the personifications of the winds - the Incarnates. This is the birth of eight new minor gods. But most of the book is not about sigmar or the incarnate gods directly, only three chapters as far as I could see were written from their perspective. The rest of the book is an ordinary fantasy adventure story. The book follows Martellus Mann, a reikguard quartermaster who was slain in the end times, but is reborn in Sigmarshall, the domain of Sigmar. I then skipped some hundred pages forward so I don't know what happened in the aftermath, but in the middle of the book, he has gathered a large party of heroes from many realms and realities in a quest for something called the spirit mill or soul mill or something like this. I know for sure that there are several worlds and that the protagonist can travel from one to the other but I didn't read a chapter where this was described in person and I don't know if this is part of the game world. In the middle of the books there is a huge betrayal, sigmarshall is under siege by the armies of the chaos gods. incarnate fights against incarnate and all are cast out from the warp. Mann starts a search for sigmar in the believe that he was reborn somewhere. The second half of the book is set on a world called Regalia. And here it gets interesting: Regalia is the only area/realm/world that has a map in the book. Regalia looks like the old world or earth and has very familiar regions and city names, etc. But there are some huge alterations: there is no Ulthuan, but a huge landbridge that connects Canada with Scandinavia. There are no elven or dwarven sounding cities or lands but strange sounding names in the Americas and Africa that don't fit any race of the old setting. There is no empire, but lots of different states in Europe and Asia - Nuln, Middenheim, etc are there, but Altdorf is not. There are more things you can deduce from the map if you assume that it represents the setting of the game, which I strongly think it does. Mann finally arrives in the city Heldenheim that is build in the Worlds Edge Mountains just in time to visit the crowning of emperor Karl Franz where he announces his plan to conquer the whole world. Mann thinks that he has found Sigmar and the book jumps to the epilog. Sigmar is chained somewhere and starts to dwindle, but then he smiles and proclaims that his great work to eliminate the chaos once and for all has only started. He vows to conquer the warp.

We don't care :D We only care that:

1. Vlad returns, or his legacy continues in some form
2. Mannfred gets his skin flayed

and surprisingly in 3rd position

3. Nagash makes good on his promise, and "make the jackals howl"
