I definitely think I'd stay away from the flames/smoke thing. I love the blending on the swords, especially how golden it looks at the tip, but that smoke/fire effect really draws attention away from that, and also I feel like brings the colours more into a darker frame over-all. It also doesn't look quite as refined as the "Goo/Blood" or the "Hairy Pits" techniques; My suggestion would be that you do not apply the "Fire/Smoke" To them all, but if you could perhaps work in a unit-filler that somehow conveys the scorching feel that would be aided by smoke/fire do it do perhaps just that?

Thinking along the lines of like, a crater/nova with a beast-y in the center (Thrown to Earth by Khorn himself?) or perhaps something involving lava fall (Fountain? Pool?) with one coming out?

Or you could do that over-all, with a handful of them having the "Smoke" effect, walking out of a billow of smoke, and the effect used sparingly though out the unit, with possible unit fillers just being a large plume/falling daemons?

I can't even find a better video of it, but the Oppressors from Diablo 3 do something similar in Act 4 (If you're played);

I only picked that one because it's terribly short, and I don't know how to start a video in the middle of it, lol; But you can see two of them fly upwards in the back right of the screen (By that blue fountain) after the mage dies. Just that general "Sky-fall" kinda crash-landing feel.

Just some food for thought I guess. I know Bloodletters don't fly, and aren't known for falling from the sky, but I like the imagery. Plus it could be cool if you use the BL's in conjunction with that new Petro Glyph that warps in a unit, although I don't even know if you're intending to play an army.

Yo Tawg~

Thanks for your comment & great effort on the video  it was a great idea to focus the effect on the unit filler only, actually i am waiting for my Belakor and he will be the center piece of the unit, i want him to stand in a middle of Lava pool or a "Crush site" look like he just flew in with the smoke effect and lava spill all over.

And i am kind of lazy to apply the effect for whole unit :P and cant wait to paint Tzeentch & Slaanesh unit. I am not going to play it but will try to build it to be suitable for gaming.. At the moment i have the below core unit plan out,

18 x Plague Bearer (With Beast or nurgle filler)
18 x Blood Letter (With Belakor filler)
18 x Blood Letter (With Bloodcrusher Herald filler)
18 x Horror of Tzeenth (with new chariot, screamer & flamer filler)
18 x Demonatte ( Going to mix some parts with hellstrider, no idea for filler yet)

Special unit still not sure yet, may hop into another project or some unfinish project.

Yeah, I was expecting you were probably not playing them; Do you mostly just warjamma for the hobby I assume? That's pretty much where I am at this point, I find the game's rules rather discordant and flibble-flabble; They just don't really suit my taste, although a game or two with friends isn't the worst way to spend a day (Although it is a dedicated event :pumpkin: ).

But yeah, I am thrilled for you to get done with the Khorn unit and move onto the Tzeentch/Slaanesh units. Them being my second and first favorite of the Ruinous Powers, respectively. I'll let you know if anything strikes me regarding Slaanesh unit filler ideas though; I just started into a WoC army (2x Battalion to start) planning on going mostly Slaanesh splashing Tzeentch (Since Slaanesh Knights is the worst idea ever in game).

Did you ever see this unit?
ai.ebayimg.com_t_Bloodletters_of_Khorne_PRO_PAINTED__00_s_NDQwfcaed8db4bc4f275e32be0bb13686bde.webp

That's a fairly generic unit filler that could go in any of the Daemon units, although kinda bland IMO; Outrageously well painted, but still not very wowing :ghost:

Anyhow, best of luck with them Bloodletters, I'll keep an eye around for updates :konrad:

They do indeed, Bigcannon the bloody show off he is makes us all look bad by comparison.
Can hold him on equal ground in converting but painting I don't stand a chance.

The filler in that image lacks any real pop, an alter or something nasty would of been better off in my opinion.

Hey, it's not Slaanesh, but it's pretty damn close!

I like the teal glow in the sorceress's palm, like she's casting a spell; Any chance you're putting some sorta clear-effect type do-jigger coming out of her hand to go along with it? (Like how some people put muzzle-flare on various rifles/rockets to show projectiles coming out occasionally in 40k)

I was looking back, and saw this, and I realized you're one of the few people I've seen who paint things in pieces and then assemble them after. (I'm sure a lot more do it, that I just don't notice) But I had a question, if you'd be so kind to answer: I'm just curious about exactly what kinda prep you put into the pieces before/after painting when you go about something like that.

Do you only dry fit pieces to see it before hand? Or blue-tak? Or just lightly glue and disassemble them to paint/ect. What about models, such as the Mage pictured above, that have more like "Two Halves" that sometimes require green stuff to smooth out gaps?

I'm also not so sure, I mean, I know that if you spray painted before gluing, again as the Mage above, you'd most likely end up scraping off the primer on the surfaces you intend to glue; Or at least I assume that's how people handle it, to insure a more secure bond? Do you end up avoiding any specific types of glue (IE, plastic glue, since it normally melts the plastic together?). And I assume you use some sort of applicator, like a Superglue that has a brush, or tooth pick or some such, to minimize the chance of super glue mussing up the already painted portions. I am fairly sure Superglue does some awful things to finely painted surfaces.

I have an Empire Wizard kit I'm currently working on, and there is no way I'd be able to paint inside the robes if they were glued in the first place, but I am certain I'll need to smooth the joints on the out side portion of the cloak or it'd have glaringly obvious gaps. My current working plan is just to paint the inside robes as well as I wish/to completion, then after I am satisfied glue them together, do some light greenstuff work and paint the outside robes afterwards. I am very unsure if I need to take any precautions though involving the greenstuff after I smooth that all out; Like if I need to get a certain type of, brush on primer or such, or if I can just give it a light go over with a base colour and go from there. I've never seen brush on primer though I've heard people on these forums talk about it before (Certainly don't think Citadel makes any).

It also seems like my handgunners are going to have quite a bit of work to do on their arms.. greenstuff fill/positioning. I'm not even sure how I plan on going about that at all, though I don't want their arms glued on before I paint their chest/inside of the arm/guns, but I'm way less certain about my ability to do them well with painting before-hand and greenstuffing the gaps (They seem sizable when I was just holding the models together to check). :zombie:

Ah, but yeah, I appreciate you taking the time to respond to this, I don't mean to be a drag on you asking so many questions. It's just something I don't regularly see discussed by many people. Thanks in advance :pumpkin:

Hi Tawg~

Its kind of look like servant of Slaanesh, its make me wanted to put in more influence of Slaanesh, for example Demonatte claw. I love corsair theme, so i am not sure if both fit each other well. For the sorceress hand i did thought of that too but usually those effect only look good in photo(especially using metal wire)i think i will try the effect from ANA's tutorial(http://chestofcolors.com/how-to-make-lava-splashes-tutorial/) hope it work :). Next thing will be the base, not sure if i going to do snow base, stone floor, wood plank or what others...any opinion ?

For me i don't have a fix painting solution, below is some photos i just took to share with you how i did mine.

Example 1 : Dark Elf Sorceress
ai962.photobucket.com_albums_ae104_niquehao_74_zps8232f06a.webp

Example 2 : Hellbrute
ai962.photobucket.com_albums_ae104_niquehao_75_zps4b6889c1.webp

Example 3 : Skaven Doomwheel, will get this chance to share this :devil2:, took me around 2 week to complete this thing..in this case i painted it part by part but soon i realize there are many area actually not visible after putting up everything, so i decided not to glue the whole thing instead of only glue certain part so that i can detach it later.

ai962.photobucket.com_albums_ae104_niquehao_76_zps72211643.webp

Detached left wheel
ai962.photobucket.com_albums_ae104_niquehao_77_zps23c10899.webp

Able to see all detail inside.
ai962.photobucket.com_albums_ae104_niquehao_78_zps2d263215.webp

Detached both wheel
ai962.photobucket.com_albums_ae104_niquehao_79_zpsabb2ea54.webp

So we can see the beauty of structuralism
ai962.photobucket.com_albums_ae104_niquehao_80_zps0a241509.webp

In the end there is only one wheel glued to the base, so it can be lift up and down to detach the wheel.
ai962.photobucket.com_albums_ae104_niquehao_81_zps2d05cf7d.webp

So basically for me is always case to case and depend on how much detail you want to show or do you want to repaint the area after you apply green stuff? Same goes with my bloodletter, i notice the join line after finishing all the skin, it really take much time to fill the join and repaint the area again.

Hope this help :).

Best regards,
Bigcannon

Hey by the way Bigcannon, I was looking at your phoenix king and HE army again, is there any chance you could post a tutorial on how you do you gem effect? Or is it a trade secret?

Hi Bloodbath~

The gem is actually using Kabalite green to build up the bright tone and dark tone, the method is same as other gem. Here is a link for your reference : http://www.thedeadmarshes.com/2012/08/painting-guides.html

Best regards,

With all due respect, I'd be offended if you hadn't of put so much effort into the interior of your Doom-Wheel! That's fantastic, truly something I wish I could do (Both completion and quality). Is the Doom Wheel magnetized to get it to come apart like that? I imagine I'll end up having a similar set up with my Locust of Hyssh I'll be making for my Empire; it'll most likely end up being able to completely come apart to some degree, although I feel that's slightly less involved than your Doom Wheel :konrad:

And I see what you mean about painting various parts before the others, I mean, I guess I had that basic concept in my mind before, but definitely good reminder. Especially since I didn't paint the torn muscles on my Doom Wolves I started before I did their hide.. and it'll be hard not to do over-splash; They're most likely just getting touch-ups since I don't think I'll be able to avoid messing up there.

Although one question I kinda asked, may not exactly have been clear, but I was trying to ask: On your Hellbrute there, since the whole surface is primed, when you go to glue the halves together will you be scraping the primer off to expose the plastic/resin beneath? Or do you just glue it, and not worry about the primer making the bond potentially easier to ruin?

Thanks for all the help again, and the insanely inspirational art. I am crazy jealous of your NMMs in particular; Sadly I have been holding off on my vampires quite a bit due to not wanting to go full into the bulk of the army with metallic paints! But I am really never going to get anywhere not practicing. I might just start painting up junk sprues left over to practice the smooth blending. Although I also know a lot of it is the conceptualization of where the light reflects off the surface. I just recently saw the genius idea to photo the bare-metal mini to get a real life image of how light plays off it, and I think it works similar if you get a model wet to see the general "High lights/Shading areas".

You call those Oreo bases?! What is that, "Half-stuffed"? Pfft, we all know the only kind that matter are Double Stuffed!

Naw but really, it doesn't look bad at all; Even with your suggestion of Oreos before hand, I still don't really think they look like it at all. I dunno, normally the association in my mind with black rocks, especially pitch black like that, is that the rock was formed from lava somehow (Obsidian/Basalt/Etc.). Granted in a world with magic, I'm sure you don't need to worry about trivial things like that (Have you seen the Storms of Magic Battle Boards they made for pictures? Purple land Ho!). Yeah, I think it looks fine, there is nothing about that basing that really shouts "WRONG" at me. I guess if you wanted you could add a few gummy worms for that "Oreo Sunday" look instead?

:pumpkin:
The spell effect looks pretty great, you did the partially melted plastic thing? It looks like you bulked it out a bit at the end there, made it look a bit more full; You just use green stuff?

Looks great as always.. With NMMs to make me weep with envy.. :grave:

Oh, I didn't even realize you were doing a full DE army :ghost: I thought you were doing a character party for some sorta DE X HE diorama :pumpkin:

I have a question though; What exactly do you do with your armies after you paint them? Do you just make amazing models and put them in display cases? :konrad:

Hi Tawg ~

I have never play a single game with these model, main reason was nobody in Vietnam play or collect warhammer. I have to continue stay here for my career :grave: sometime i might even think that i am the only one in Vietnam is doing this hobby  haha. My model is just for display and feed my lust of painting stuff.

Back to the picture, got some update on my High elf while still waiting for my Deamon stuff to come so that i can complete my Khorne unit.

Picture number 1 : rebase all my HE with more green as the snow is getting yellow now :(. Looking forward to make a armies of parade size display board. How about a Tower of Hoeth ~

Thanks for viewing & Happy painting.~

Ahhh, always a pleasure to see your log update :pumpkin:

That's unfortunate about the hobby, but glad you're able to continue; I hope it doesn't cost too much trying to get models out there, I hear it can be expensive in some countries (As if it's not expensive in general lol :pumpkin: ).

Great looking unit though. I wonder, how did you take them off their bases? Just with a hobby knife and care I assume? Did you do anything to get the flock that was not to your liking off the base (Like just scrape it off, or I dunno?); I know some other forum goers were asking about striping a model that had already been based, and the worry that it would mess with the flock, or if they needed to remove the flock before they put them into the chemical or what have you.

I can't wait to see you paint up one of those Phoenixes :konrad: Are you doing it as fire or ice?

Hi All ~ few weeks ago i tried to order directly from GW online store, the shipping was very expensive, i bought 2 limited edition HE book, 1 skycutter, 1 phoenix & 1 loremaster, total shipping 75USD. When it arrive Vietnam i have to pay another 80USD for import tax..in total i have to pay 155USD extra :(.

Enough with the shipping & Tax, here is some update for my HE. it really take a lot of time and effort to paint entire army with NMM.. phew..

Happy painting cheers~

I feel your pain. I live in Australia and we usually get ripped off with prices and shipping here too :frown: Oh well.
As always your painting is just phenomenal. I REALLY like the colour scheme for the Sea Helm in particular though :O I look forward to seeing him finished, along with the Sea Guard

Have to agree that sea helm is SO brilliant! The general freehanding is unbelivably good too..! Just wow! Your NMM have me convinced that it looks really good army-wide wide too. So I will try this out further down the road.
My first model with a complete NMM just needs basing and he is done.. It took forever to do, so can only imagine how long it must take to do a whole army this way!!!

Keep up the good work, I've loved every update so far, need more ;)
