Hi everyone. Not sure how active the list is now, but I'll wave to everyone here...

Recently decided I need some undeath in my life again. :vampire3: Starting to gather models with a few bigger bricks to get me going for core blocks. I've amassed 50 ghouls and 55 skeles and 20 zombies so far. I have a few character models and a dabble also from AOS lines. I am aiming for a respectable army from which I can go in several directions if I want.

I'm more of a collector / painter than a player. My group disbanded back in 6th Ed. but I still love the models and the art and I do enjoy painting. I had a good start to a VC army way back when, and sold it. So, I was bitten once more and well, off we go once more.

Lots of brilliant new pieces to work on too...

Welcome to the forum :) . The painting and modelling side still has activity and you are more than welcome to share your painting and progress over in the appropriate board as you go. I hope that you enjoy participating here.

Really glad to hear that. As I get things together and start paint jobs, I will be glad to set up a blog and share pics. I'm pretty chuffed to be doing these again! It should be fun!

Welcome to Carpe Noctem!
Let me tell you that to be a collector and painter is a solid way to go, as the new AoS models are stunningly beautiful!
I definitely agree, the new models and even some of the 8th Ed. models are stunning. I look forward to getting to them in the queue of my massive pile of shame. LOL I've been working on test pieces for color schemes on a few models and am jazzed. I love too how several of the core models really do come together fast once you start to sit down and get to work. I'm not used to that any more. Chorfs and Hobgoblins take a long time to paint; I love the old models, but man, they can be slow.

Yeah, Tomb Kings are cool, but I want to put together a more classical VC list. I've begun to get somewhere with models; finished a few ethereal troops because I wanted to set that color scheme and also have finished a few characters. Now, I'm slogging through a unit of 35 skeletons, mainly because I see them as that integral to an army's core. I have another box of the old skeletons too to put together and might be able to stretch that into a box of 25 models, if I'm creative. I like the Oldhammer look but models aren't easy to come by. I have a block of ghouls too I can paint, as well as one of the old boxes of zombies... I figure once I get through my core, I can work on knights and Blood dragons, as well as some of the again more basic troops like wolves and bats. I have both in good stead here. Once I get through these bigger blocks, I'll start to think more about other units. I just haven't gotten that far yet really. It's ok; I'm having fun so far....

When I get through more stuff, I'll share properly. In the meantime, I'll show a few models I've gotten sorted to set the color schemes... Enjoy the shots!

I use three colors, black, turquoise, and white from the Vallejo range and paint the model primarily in three zones, white to the bottom, black to the top. I then dry brush each area, and slowly build up volumes and drybrush again. You kinda don't want to be too careful with the drybrushes though, as long as generally you keep the idea of areas when you drybrush, it builds up on top of each other which adds to the effect. I think for the transitions, stippling helps to get things to mesh together and blend from one color to the next. It's a pretty fast technique; I just did a banshee and the model was done for the most part in like 20 minutes. I go back after and pick out details, and make sure transitions are clean, but it really isn't hard.

If you wanted to get a smoother blend, you could go back and water down mid-range volumes for a glaze. That just takes time and effort.
