I like it Jake. Looks very realistic. I know i am always asking questions, but can't help it, i'm getting excited every time i see ur work !! Sooo, here is another question. How did u achieve that chipping effect? Also are filters like washes? I saw some in MIG's website, but can't understand how they work and what they rly are.

Thanks bud! Ask away, I'm a P&M mod, so by all means :).

The chipping effect is very simple:
I take a sponge from a blister pack and apply some paint to it, normally a light tan or a very light color of the base color. I'll dab it sporadically, sticking to corners and spots that'd see wear and tear. Once those are in place and dry, I take a chocolate brown and edge in the patches I created, again being sporadic. Once that's done, I'll apply a wash or two over the scratch to make it a little worn and uniform.

Hope that helps!

Filers are the equivalent of washes, but you must keep them very thin. As you can see on the JT, the panels are all different slightly in color, this is because I add different filters all over it to give the impression that the metal plates have all been worn a little differently from the elements. A filter is 90% thinner and 10% enamel paint. You just want to wet the surface and not let the filter pool up at all. It's a very gradual effect and takes a bit to build up, but it's great for providing subtle shadings and accents.

Ask away!

Jake

Great stuff there Jake. As always your painting is superb as is your technique. Since I'll be done with my armies soonish (just a couple months away and yes, I can't believe I'm acutally finishing a project) I want to focus more on improving my own technical knowledge to get better at painting display pieces. Thus the files you're about to send u_m about alternative paints, weathering, pigments and the like do interest me as well. For a file sending medium I suggest dropbox as long as you don't violate any copyrights of course ;)

Cheers,

Dogmar

Very nice, always a crushing blow to come visit this thread, regardless of what you're painting :pumpkin:

I am curious though, could you define 'Pin-washes' by chance? Not really sure what that means..

RE: Redarmy’s Painting Thread 2.0 – Redarmy Strikes Back!

That weathering is superb, it really looks like it's been out in the field for a while.
Weathering is a technique I've never really had a go at, fortunately I'm currently repainting my Space Marine army so can give it a go.

Could I pester you for some tips for an absolute beginner to the technique?

Cheers,Monkey

Haha. I could do that. I actually converted my book into a PDF so that I could actually read it on my phone when I don't have "the tome" to haul around. Plus, my copy is a signed copy so I wouldn't want to ruin it too much. The techniques learned in it can be applied to anything really; I'll actually be applying a lot of my new knowledge to my GB entry this year as well!

Pin washes are 60% thinner and 40% enamel paint, so they are thicker than a filter. You can make a pin wash out of any paint really, but for the stuff I'm doing with the JT, I need an enamel that is a little bit tougher to stand up to the mediums I'm using (acrylic would dissolve too quick).

A pin wash is best used if you load your brush up and apply it to a rivet seem, an edge, a bolt or anything needs to have contrast and outline. You simply angle the brush just right and the wash flows off and takes the shape of the bit you're trying to accentuate. You might get some overflow spots, but just take some mineral spirits or thinner and clean them up afterwards.

A pin-wash is great if you have a lot of details on a model and you want to accent them.

Sure! One quick thing to do would be to create some "break up" in the space marine's armor. Make sure to wash and accentuate the different pads and elements of the armor. Then, you could "filter" different pads to really make it look like each one is worn a bit different. Also, you could do some simple chipped effects by taking your lighter basecoat and using a dark brown or an armor primer color to make it look like the armor is getting warn.

Since the space marines are a smaller scale, less weathering might be more as you don't want to overwhelm them. Do you have some pics I could see? I could probably provide better insight that way!

All the best,

Jake

Cheers, I was more thinking along the lines of using it on vehicles as opposed to infantry. I haven't got any finished yet, so can't show you any pics, I'm still trying to decide on a colour scheme!

Thanks for the tips, can't wait to see the rest of the tank.

Ah! A vehicle...what kind? And what colors are in your army?? I can help with a scheme and stuff if you'd like.

Well some more progress was made.

Grime, rust and everything else that could possibly be added to a 70 ton piece of German engineering has been slapped on this thing. Just need to attach the treads and get some more dust/ dirt on it.

Next up will be the crew once the tracks are completed that is. I'm going to do a base as well. I want to make it look like snow is receding during a very wet and soggy winter.

All the best,

Jake

That looks loverly!
The rust is particularly exquisite if I may be so bold as to say so.
The weathering on the back of the left side looks a little flat, but I think that's probably due to the size of the images.

You've made my day. Can't wait to see it the Jagdtiger finished.

If only World of Tanks allowed that color scheme in game...

RE: Redarmy’s Painting Thread 2.0 – Redarmy Strikes Back!

Thanks for the kind words guys. I'm working on the base right now. It should be interesting. I'm also working on my GB entry as well while it dries. Nothing really to show for the base yet, but I'm sure there'll be something tomorrow!

Love the tank, do you usually just use these as display pieces or do you use them for a game?

Thanks :)

The tank is a 1/35th scale so it'd be tough to use for a game. This is going in a case at work so it'll be put on a shelf in my office. You could almost get away with it as a model for 40K though, but it'd need to be 1/48th scale.

I am playing Hordes now though, so I'll be putting together my army at a very slow rate but to a high standard. Should be a bit of fun!

Love the Jagdtiger. Nice to see you do some non-game minis too. This brings some golden memories back, because when I was a kid and I got my grandma to give me some money for the first time, to use all by myself.

I bought myself a 1/35 Tiger I from Tamiya. My parents were furious. xD

RE: Redarmy’s Painting Thread 2.0 – Redarmy Strikes Back!

Next question...is there a brand that makes particularly accurate and well made world-war 1 or 2 equipment that you collect or is it just a matter of whatever comes off the shelf. I have often wondered about this kind of model, because 40k stuff does not hold a lot of interest for me. (except for ORKS...not sure why!)

Tamiya is a great brand. I love them; they're full of detail and definitely go the extra mile to make things incredibly accurate.

Crew is done, now I just need to finish the base.
