I see what you mean about the flesh colors and toning down the color of the tongue but I painted them so they will mix with the other oop Ghouls I painted back in 2005. In the future I may return to them but I have 48 of the newer plastic ghouls to finish first.

Can't say I'm a big fan of the grey skin on those. It remind me of the original Ogres back in 6th edition. I personally prefer a more fleshy color when it come to skin :p

Also I would suggest you try some soft pink on the tongue, would help make it a bit more natural.

Reaper Ghoul Witch on Cauldron

I finished the fourth model for Zomtober, A Reaper Ghoul Witch on a Cauldron

The Ghoul Witch is based on a 20mm square base so I can rank her up with the other ghouls in the army.

IMG_6521.webp

I started painting the Ghoul Witch with the same piant plan as the other ghouls but decided to make her stand out a little more.

IMG_6545.webp

After adding a more flesh tone and a good chestnut ink/future wash

IMG_6560.webp

Then some rotting flesh to tone down the flesh and a scorched brown base on all the fur, wood and bone.

IMG_6561.webp

another ink wash and some highlights. One neat detail on the model is the chicken foot and Voodoo doll tied to the top of the rack.

IMG_6562.webp

The finished model. I think the albino Rattle snake turned out well. I thought about painting the diamond pattern on the snake but an Albino has more power than a regular rattler.

IMG_6563.webp

The back of the model. Another nice detail is the talons on the rack hooked into her flesh to hold it on.

I am glad to have finished the Ghoul Witch. I have had it for a couple years and it has been in the painting queue primed since last year.

Second chance Skeletons

I have decided to ramp my VC army up to 10000 points. The big problem is the 2500 points of core troops. I have decided to round out the army with skeletons. Ghouls would be more economical but skeletons are easier for me to paint.

So thanks to evil bay I picked up a lot of second chance skeletons.

IMG_6700.webp

They had seen much better days and most were broken before they were shipped out. Some were badly posed and I started the rebuild.

IMG_6701.webp

I rebuilt these to add to my unit of hand weapon and shield, armored skeletons.

I want all of them to have helmets so I used a tomb kings head as a basis for a helmet conversion,

IMG_6702.webp

I trimmed down the streamers on the sides so it would look like cheek guards. Then I trimmed down the center of the head band and added some green stuff to make it look more like a helmet. Last I redid all the shield bosses so the new model will mix with my original unit.

Two more second chance Skeletons

I have a couple more second chance skeletons reassembled. I am not a big fan of skeletons breaking out of the ground but a couple came in the lot and it was leave them in the bits box or fix them and add them to the army.

IMG_6703.webp

The first was an emerging torso with a tomb stone on the base. I broke of the torso and the tombstone and then glued them to seperate bases. I use all the tombstones as counters in the back rank of a unit for summoned models. They are good for anything on a 20mm base and I dont have to carry around a second army of spare models incase I get lucky raising troops.
Originally the torso had spread out arms and a shield. I cut the shield off and had to resculpt the detail on the back of the hand. Then I repositioned the arms so it would rank up in a unit. Last I used some putty to make the disturbed earth around the base.

IMG_6704.webp

The second model just had one foot left in its grave. I just added a ring of putty for the disturbed earth. I still need to attach the shield arm.

I think the two models will break up the monotony of all the ranked skeleton units.

Another lot of Second chance skeletons

I picked up another lot of second chance skeletons from evil bay.

IMG_6885.webp

They were well broken up before they were shipped, with a couple more casualties in route. Several of them wer missing their shield arms and those arms were not included in the lot. So I raided the bits box for a replace ment.

IMG_6889.webp

Skeleton with new chaos shield that "was only dropped once".

IMG_6890.webp

I trimmed of the arm on the back of the shield but left the hand. then I hollowed out the hand and used a bit of brass wire for the armature. I drilled out the bit of shoulder that was left and glued in the wire.

IMG_6907.webp

After the greenstuff was added. I think it will paint up well enough. Several of the skeletons need shields and I have a bunch of surplus chaos shields to finish them with.

I have figured out that the old style skeletons are still available but ony in the tomb king skeleton box. I really like the new VC skeletons but they just don't fit with the models I already have. I have been picking up some of the tomb king skeletons but I don't want to use any Tomb king shields this leaves me short of shields. Using the Chaos shields will help me finish out some units and even better is the variation of shields will help the newer style skeletons blend in a little better.

Mummies for 3rd Ed Undead

A goal for this year is to play a 3rd edition Warhammer fantasy battle game against my buddy Chuckaroobob. We have played a couple 3rd ed games before but the hook this year is I want to field 10,000 points of painted Undead. This goes along with my plan to build 10k points of Vampire Counts for 8th edition. I have the 2500 points of core troops for the 8th ed game but for the 3rd ed game you need 50% of the army from troops so 5000 points. The good thing is that anything not a character is a troop. I still needed to make up some points so I checked out the most expensive unit in the Undead army and it is Mummies at 80 points each. I stalked Evil Bay for a while and managed to get a deal on some old GW mummies.

IMG_7032.webp

The first batch of mummies. They were cheap but one was missing a foot and one was missing an arm. Easy enough to fix.

IMG_7042.webp

I made an armature out of brass wire and then pinned the model to a base.

IMG_7043.webp

After the first round of greenstuff. It is a little thin at the ankle so I plan to add more to match the thickness of the leg. I want to get atleast four more GW Mummies and might pick up enough to make a twenty model unit.

Turorial for Skeletons with Crossbows

I have been building up a 10k point army for a 3rd edition Oldhammer game. One Options the Undaed had was Crossbow armed skeletons. GW never made models for them so you had to convert them and I never did. Twenty years on and a bit of a better modeler I decided to add a unit to my army. To the bits boxes I went.

IMG_7049.webp

The ket to the conversion is the small crossbow from the old dark elf infantry sprue. There was one on the sprue per four infantry models so most people with a good size army should have a handful of them.

IMG_7050.webp

I am using the ols style skeletons but you can still get them in the Tomb kings skeleton warrior box. I used the spear with the studs on the shaft as the base for the conversion.

IMG_7052.webp

cut the crossbow off behind the rear sight. It has a very small cross section so I used the smallest drill bit to make a hole for the pin.

IMG_7054.webp

I cut the spear off a couple millimeters in front of the hand and about five or six millimeters behind the elbow. I used a larger bit to drillout the spear shaft.

IMG_7055.webp

You have to be very carefull drilling out hte crossbow. Several of them I ended uo drilling out of the groove for the bolt but after gluing it I can fill the gap with a bit of greenstuff. Drilling the larger hole in the spear shaft allows room to adjust the crossbow front so it is even with the spear shaft. After the glue set I filed down the back of the spear shaft to make it more square and look less like a spear shaft.

IMG_7059.webp

The almost finished product glued on an old style skeleton. I still need to add a little bit of green stuff to smooth out the join between the spear and crossbow bits.

The unit of ten readt for some paint.

I did that too :) Got lots of used Skeletons, and used all the broken and/or unrepairable one to make a full unit coming from the ground! That's what's great about undead, no model can be really lost :P

Gotta love the mummies too. I got a unit for my Tomb Kings, and while there's a lot of bandage to paint, they still look great!

And good job on the crossbow, they look great! I remember doing a few of them back in the day with some Hero Quest weapons, but they weren't looking that good!

RE: Two more second chance Skeletons

i picked up some more old skeletons from the original skeleton army box. They are in rather bad shape so a few more will end up as skeletons crawling out of the ground. I plan to get some more pictures up soon.

Liches for 10k Oldhammer game

I am rounding out my army list for a 10k game of Wfb 3rd edition oldhammer game and have decided to add some Lich characters. I knew I had some somewhere in the "Closet of Doom" so I went searching.

IMG_7038.webp

Fisrt not a Liche but close enough. He is an Empire light Wizard but with the Egyptian motif going on he is getting ready to take a walk on the dark side.

IMG_7039.webp

Second, the model I was looking for. A Liche from Marauder MM51 Undead characters. I was getting him ready to paint for my all Necromancer army but then the current army book shut that down.

IMG_7041.webp

Last is a warhammer quest Tomb Guardian I found in the same box. He is going into the army as an undead hero.

I have been reassembling some old skeleton horsemen to bring my skeleton cavarly unit up to twenty models. They were in such bad shape I just put them into the simple green. I should have taken pictures, especially where the previous owner used rubber cement to hold some of them together. I got them cheap but it might not have been as much of a deal as I first expected.

Thanks for looking.

Once he is painted I will add a shield. i will probably use one of the more characterful shields from the current skeleton box.

That tomb guardian model is great. Are you going to slap a shield on him?

I love that old Liche model, strong nostalgia for me regarding that one! I re-bought it a while ago on eBay because I just wanted to have it back. Definitely want to see him painted :)

And about the same with that Tomb Guardian! I have one that I kept from all these years ago, and I bought a bunch of them on ebay to go with him. Tried to rank them with other models, but proved to be hard! I have about 11 of them split evenly between the two variant, but still no idea what I'll do with them. In any case, another sweet model that I want to see painted!

The Tomb Guardian is going to be a champion in a Skeleton unit for Oldhammer 3rd edition games and a Wight King for 8th edition.

The Lich I plan to use as a Lich in Oldhammer games and a Necromancer in 8th edition games.

Another Citadel Mummy repair

I have finished repairing a second Citadel Mummy from a lot I picked up cheaply on Evil BAy.

IMG_7048.webp

The model arrived missing an arm. I started with a wire armature but went back and decided to use a zombie arm as the base for the repair. I figured the out streched fingers on the zombie arm would look better than a bandaged hand I planned to use with the wire armature.

IMG_7081.webp

The finished reapir after several rounds of greenstuff bandages have been wrapped on.

I have won another lot of four Citadel mummies and they are shambling their way here. That will give me a full ten model unit for 10k of Undead Oldhammer game I am planning to play sometime this Summer.

Oop Carrion with Riders

I picked up another oldhammer score

IMG_7082.webp

For just US$28 shipped I picked up six of them. A couple have broken scythes but they are an easy fix. I have put them into the simple green to strip the paint and plan to get started on them as soon as I get them cleaned up.

More second chance skeletons

I picked up another lot of second chance skeletons. They looked in bad shape in the pictures but once they arrived I realized just how bad they were. Some looked like they had been painted by dipping them in paint, others had been repaired with rubber cement to hold them together, the shields were assembled with the boss on the back instead of the front and more. I took the whole lot and dumped them in the simple green.

IMG_7071.webp

After a couple long soaks in the simple green and several cleaning sessions this is what I ended up with. Most still in bad shape but good enough to work with.

IMG_7077.webp

Probably the worst model of the lot. It was originally covered with a paper soaked with glue robe, to make it either a Wraith or a Necromancer. It didn't have feet to start with and the rest of the parts came off when I removed the robe. I debated about just dropping it in the bits box to use on a terrain piece at a later date. Instead I hunted up a couple legs I had cut off a model years ago when I did a mounted Warith conversion.

IMG_7078.webp

The model with two new boots. I will call him "Died With His Boots On" I just need to add a bit of greenstuff and he will be ready to go.

IMG_7079.webp

The Usual suspects. With them on bases and heads added they don't look near as bad. I had to use one of the newer heads to finish them up. I later found the errant missing head but put it in the bits box for later.

IMG_7080.webp

Like it always seems to happen once I started trying to pin arms on them I broke another ones legs. I repinned the legs but the join was wobbly and it was a matter of time till they would break again, then it hit me, in the Immortal words of Johnny Cash " I got Chains, Chains around my Feet." So a little greenstuff to make some shackles and a section of chain from a chaos marauder flail and A great set of Leg Irons. It will keep the legs from breaking and adds character to the model.

The lot came with a bunch of the old bits from the Skeleton army box and I plan to assemble a couple more archers and grim reapers with scythes. The main reason I bought the lot was a group of ten complete skeleton horses. I plan to add them to my current wight cavalry so I can field a group of twenty for the 10k of Undead Oldhammer mega battle.
