The Awakened

  • The masquerade of murder returns! A new game of Vampires Amongst Us has begun. Unmask the killers, trust no one, and try to survive the night. Find out more and sign up now!
Sorry, I meant to have my vampire(Vampres? I dont know the female form of Vampire) up for Halloween, however I noticed to late that I didnt have enough Agrax Shade (Again...), and the FLGS was closed. I'm going in tomorrow for the Halloween game, so I'll pick some up. She'll be just a day late, as all she needs now is Agrax and Crimson shade, and maybe a post-shade dotting of the eyes if the shade drowns them out.

Presenting Lady Ava Nox. She is going to be used in games of Mordhiem, so she's actually been given a name and will be worked into the fluff.

As you can tell, Black, Grey, and Red will be the Bloodborn colors. I'm shooting for a gothic, classical vampires look here, and I think I've pulled it off nicely. Another thing, all Bloodborn vampires will have Green eyes (Of varying shades), Rakarth flesh skin, and brown hair (Specifically Dryad bark).

On a side note, I finally got off my ass and found a white box to take pictures in. They look much better, and much less yellow, though I still need to toy around with the focus. Its just an empty box of clay I bought for a different project.

And, some better pics of Mortimer (Also given a name, because Mordhiem)

Finally, a custom Dreg (Igor), made from mantic skeleton legs, Black knight armor, and ghoul arms/head.

Now, with the new box I may have to go back and retake pictures of older models already posted. So far I only plan to do this for the skeletons, who are all fully painted now, though I may eventually expand that.

I plan on using the legs from a box of ghouls with some modifications for one Dreg, and probably some kind of Empire legs for the other, so each is at least somewhat unique.

Alright, no new models at the moment, just a "Small" announcement. I've happened to stumble upon an extra $100 (My grandparents where in town and we had an early Christmas since they cant make it in December), and I thought it was pretty clear what I had to buy. I've just ordered Nagash, he'll be in Friday and I'll likely pick him up sometime next week. I am of course excited (I mean, I'm about to own a god), but I'm also kinda scared. I wouldn't say my painting skills are BAD, I just don't think I can do him anything close to any justice. So, in hopes of getting him "Right", I will be following the official tutorial to the letter, no variation. The official paint scheme looks perfect as it is, and He's just to important to risk it. Wish me luck!

Now, stepping down from that announcement, here's something far more mundane. While working on some skeletons, trying to get my warband ready for Thursday (They should be done today or tomorrow), I noticed out of the corner of my eye an old model I'd made awhile back. It was supposed to be a test for some VC in space kinda deal, but it never took off. So, seeing this model on my desk, I had a great idea. I would take it, glue it to a square base, and boom! Instant dreg. I will have to make another one for those games where a joke model cant really be used (I'm looking at you, GW stores), but I may as well pay homage to my favorite song. That said, This is Ground control to Major Tom. Your circuits dead there's something wrong.
DSCN6131.webp

Can you hear me Majo....Oh... uh... apparently skeletons cant operate spacecraft, who knew? Well, at least we got the requested data.

The idea came from hearing about a warband named after only STDs (Specifically a nurgle daemon named Syphilis), and decided to name one of my skeletons and equally unfluffy name. So I came up with Major tom, and decided with a name like that he may as well look the part, right?
I hope to eventually buy a proper astronaut figure, swap the head for a skull, and use him to replace Major Tom.

Alright, got my entire warband done just in time for the game tomorrow. I suppose that isn't much, considering half of it was already painted, but its something.

And a special close up on what has to be my favorite skeleton/zombie in either of these squads (So much so that I gave it a name), Rex (I never said it was a good name)

They are the original bloodborn crusaders, the first army to fight under that name for the glory of Nagash, and it is in their honor that the rest of the Valdros armies march under that name

Tonight, a god walks among us. All shall bow before the presence of our holy father, Nagash, the bringer of unlife and cleanser of worlds. It is by his will that we are reborn through vampirism, and for that we owe our lives onto him, that we may repay our debts through servitude, as we strive for a common goal: To bring about eternal undeath.

When GW said he was big, they didn't lie. I couldn't capture his majesty in a single picture, so I had to split it in three to truly show case The Holy Father. At his feet is a lowly dreg, just for size comparison. Now, since he has the Liber Mortis in his hands, that means there is an extra bit of the closed book, meant to go at his side if he uses the spirit claw. I have plans two possibilities for this bit: Have it carried around by Micheal Valdros, or turn it into the center piece of an altar.
Oh, and dont worry, the sub-assemblies are still not attached, I just used some creative blue tacking to get him battle-ready while I stock up for painting him.

Putting the set together was really fun, though the mess of spirits got me lost for a bit, it was never too difficult or too simple, and the end results where just perfect! Its a bit intimidating at first, and it never really stops being so (It just wouldn't be Nagash if it did), but eventually you come to terms with the fact that you now own a god. (can you tell I'm excited?) Plus, it has just enough extra bits to give me some Bloodborn Holy Artifacts (Namely the staff, the hilt of the Mortis blade, Liber mortis and the spirit claw. I plan to buy the other artifacts and turn them into shrines/sites as well, so we can have a complete collection!) to add to the family, or turn into religious sites.

I know you're worried about painting him, and I agree that it can seem a bit daunting. But judging by the looks of the almost-assembled model, I'd say you're fine. Anyone who can put that thing together so well on their first try is A-Okay by me!

Keep up the great work! And get yourself a daylight bulb, I assume whatever you're using for lighting is why all your pics keep coming out so yellow. If you get a free (!) program like Picasa, you can hit one button and it'll color-correct everything for you. :)

I'll definitely check out Picasa, should help with the pictures. For lighting I'm currently just using a florescent bulb, though I do have a day time bulb laying on my desk right now (For my snake, of course. I don't just keep heat lamp bulbs laying around for no reason). It also probably doesnt help that I'm taking pictures on a yellow tile slab with a yellow box in the background under a yellow light.

For the relics, so far I've decided what to do for the staff and hilt, though I still need to figure out what to do with the book and the claw. Everything will of course be some type of magical or otherwise special terrain.
The sword hilt will be made to stick out of a large stone, so it looks like the entire sword is embedded inside, King Arthur style.
The staff will likely be placed in the center of the Witchfate tor roof, likely with some modification made to the little spikes surrounding the roof (Either ropes holding the staff in place, or some type of magical beam)
The claw I dont know for sure, but I think I want to do some thing with it and a garden of Mor.
You'll notice most of these involve official terrain, that'd be because, quite simply, I have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to crafting terrain more complex than a rock.

Two things: Touched up Ava Nox and Mortimer in Picasa (Meaning I removed the yellow tint),

and I've begun making the artifact terrain. Since Nagash himself wont be started for a long, long time (At least until I own half the paints required), I figured I might as well start using his bits. These haven't been white balanced since its just a bare mini, so its all grey anyway

Oh, right, and two more Dregs. I've found my theme for these guys: Ale. The little guy has his bottle, the big one has a barrel of Bugmans tied around his back (Which I will paint the words "Bugmans" onto, and have the inside be a brown tinted-water effect), and I plan to find a third goblin and have him coming out of a barrel (Either the barrel on the big guys back or a separate one)

Alrighty, two more dregs done, one to go. It just occurred to me that I have 4 dregs, while I can only actually use 3. Well, the other one is a ghoul then, I guess.

The flesh on the short drunk one is a bit pinker than the pictures want you to believe, but otherwise they seem fine. Thinking of running some 'ard coat over the bottle, never used any before, but it seems like the right place to use it.

Edit: Anyone know the base size for Vargheists/Crypt Horrors? I have a plan in mind for a more traditional horror movie monster to replace them, as I dont really like the winged vampire look/giant ghouls, and I think they'll go nicely next to my grey-and-red vampires.

Small update, need opinions. Should I keep the ruby and flag, or do they seem out of place?

Ignore the bluetac, its just there to hold the sub-assemblies together temporarily. Their wont be a mound around the base of the flag, and you'll be able to see the rock behind the gem.
I'm not entirely sure how to go about painting the rock, I'm thinking of either making it just plain old stone or Obsidian. Not sure what to do with the flag either, as my freehand is admittedly lacking.

I've decided against the flag, but only because with my freehand it would look out of place. I may, however, find a smaller flag to use in the same manner. I decided to re-purpose it for my skeleton standard bearer.

Some new pictures from a better angle, so you can see the side.

From here the altar will be a bit of a back burner project, slowly painting up individual parts as the ideas on how to do so come to me. I'll start with the bottom piece (This thing: DSCN6237.webp )

I should have some Mantic Werewolves, an Abyssal Dwarf king (To be converted into a dwarven Vampire) and some Manor House gargoyles, (Of which I dont have even the slightest idea of how to paint) coming in shortly, so its going to be a busy week

And the Gargoyles are in! Sadly, due to a mix up, only two of the three gargoyles I ordered arrived (One normal one and the Champion), so I'll have to wait till the second one arrives (I'm saving the champion for later, as he uses a different color scheme).

The first regular Vargheist, standing atop his latest victim (He ate the flesh, due to the whole unstoppable hunger thing), his scythe still dripping with their blood.
