Not much work done this week. But I managed to paint the tongue on the banner.

I've also completed one zombie ^^
He's one of three zombies I made for Mordheim.

And lastly I've got a treat for you that I have been meaning to show you for months. When I started the army the plan was to have blue cloth, turquoise armour and orange rust blades. I didn't feel rust would fit on wight blades so I thought of painting them green with "mirror" effect. But then I thought: Why not orange blade? So I painted one for test, got really pleased with it and decided for that. I've wanted to show it to ever since but got distracted (mainly by the cat -.-). So here it is.

I'd like some advise on how to paint the backside of the blade. Should I follow the exact same patter or should it be mirrored?
I'd also like general advise on how to use the same technique on axes and other blades with larger flat areas.

I followed the tutorial in WD 362 except that I used orange instead of blue.
But I can go though the basics here as well. Base was Blazing orange, then shaded with red gore (possibly with a little chaos black towards the end, can't remember) in a alternating pattern. The highlighted towards bleached bone (possibly vomit brown, again not sure (I really have to start writing these things down...)) and finally with skull white. Also painted some strips of skull white over the darkest areas. Always keeping the paints thin is very important.
I see now that I should have highlighted harder with skull white, must practice some more before I paint my grave guards.

Good idea to practise first on other blades, going to try that too, will be painting a unit graveguard soon and my idea was to do the blades orange to contrast the blue theme I had in mind. Thanks for the example.

The banner is amazing. I love the orange glass blade, it's simply beautiful. I think I would mirror it on the backside of the blade, rather than copy the exact pattern. Keep the glassy look of the tainted blades. erv:

Seriously, it been way too long since my last post, time to get this plog going again.

I'm finally done gluing all my Grave Guards, now they just need paint. But I'd like some feedback on them before I spray them. So here they are:

Now I got a spare coffin offline to have carried by GG through a set of gates, I just want to ask why you decided to put it on their hands and not shoulders?

@Zhatan: Sounds interesting

@Duke: The whole point of the coffin is to fill some spaces, didn't want to buy yet another box of GG. If it would be carried on the shoulders I would need four guys to carry it and mounted on a 40x40mm base that wouldn't fill any more space. As it is now it is drawn by two guys at the front while it is carried in the back by two wheels. I realize now that the wheels aren't visible in the pictures so here is another one.

The white stuff is indeed plastic card. For both the banner and some of the shoulderpads I heated the the plastic in boiling water, and then bent it to desired shape using pliers (hope google translate didn't just fool me on that word...). It really is an effective way to make your own banners and other stuff.

First test model for paint scheme will be up tomorrow if all goes according to plan, so keep your eyes open.

As promised, here is the first grave guard:

The only thing that isn't finished is the base, and the only thing I not that pleased with is the gold, think it needs to be darker.

I think the gold looks great, but if you wanted darker you could use the Dwarf Bronze and then highlight with one of the gold colors.

Wauw I like your colors a lot, possibly going to copy this for my unit when I get around to them. I can only imagine the whole unit will look $@%! awesome.

Try washing the gold with badab black and then applying mithril silver weathering to it. It sounds counter intuitive, but the mithril silver makes it look less "shiny"

@Sanai: I'll try that, but with Devlan Mud instead of Badab Black.

But first. I tried another technique for the gold on another GG. He is to one in the middle in the picture bellow. The guy to the right is the fist GG and the guy to the left is a test for another way of painting the armour.

I don't think I'll use the alternative armour technique, black isn't fun to paint.

Here are more comparative shots between the first and second GG. The only thing that is different is the gold.

I think the gold looks better on the one on the left (The one with horns on his helmet as opposed to wings).
