I use a quite old school way of painting orcs, since I started this army long ago. Fortunately none of the colours have been removed from the GW range so everything is like it was from the beginning.
The basecoat is Dark Angles Green and the highlight with Snot Green. After that I vary between individuals and race.

Orcs are highlighted with either I either Goblin Green and later Rotting Flesh (this was done on the BSB) or with Scorpion Green mixed in.

Savage Orcs are higlighted with first mixes of Scorpion Green and Snot Green and then with Sunburst Yellow added in, until you have pure yellow.

Common goblins follow the same patter as orcs only with a bit starker highlights.

Nigh Goblins are basecoated with Catachan Green instead and highlighted by mixing in Scorpion Green and later Rotting Flesh.

Black Orcs are also basecoated with Catachan Green but are then shaded with a little Chaos Black mixed in and then highlighted with just rotting Flesh added to the basecoat.


I can also add that I will switch my attention to VC for a while now so don't expect to much activity here.

Update!

Currently working on a Great Cave Squig, which I am building myself. The squig is to be entered into a painting competition called "The Fang" held at my local GW store, that is if everything goes as planned. The competition is next weekend and I still have lots to do, but my main concern is about the paint scheme. As you might know my squig are painted in a wide range of colours with a lot of patterns and other weird stuff. This one is the biggest and basest of them all and should have a paint scheme that suits that role. So I'm asking for suggestions. Go nuts, he could be painted in pretty much any colour or pattering.

If it is of interest I can add that the goblin on top of him will have purple clothing like the rest of my Night Goblins, the cloak however is undecided, suggestions are welcome here too.

WoW great looking squig! Much better than the GW's ones. I suggest paint the squig black/grey with yellow stripes, it will look very scary! Btw what did u use for the teeth?

Nice suggestion Desfer! I tend to forget that black is a colour and hence I don't even have any black squigs, yet. Will remember that idea. But keep 'em coming

Glad you liked the sculpt too, the teeth are carved out of plastic sprue, quite simple really.

I quite like the idea of leopard print or zebra stripe squigs myself. Whatever color/pattern you go with, I would paint something not the same but similar on his cloak.

Also, you like my my tiger squig then Von Calyptra, pictures of him on page one. I feel I want something more vibrant than a leopard scheme on this squig, and zebra, well that might be a bit too weird, but good suggestion on the cloak, will remember that one.

Poison dart tree frogs you say Adam. Well I had and look and wow... those are some fine looking frogs. Not sure if the patterns would work on the squig though, might look a bit too cluttered. I would camouflage the shape of the squig too much I think. But some of them might work, like this one bellow:

Will have to think about it, getting kind of used too the idea of black with yellow stripes however. Will remeber these frog though, for other squigs in the future.

ALright, the sculpt is pretty much done now, I will add a few boils, cuts and possibly scars to him this evening, and finish the base hopefully.

Here is what the great cave squig looks like (beware of high pictures):

Since last time I've added horns, changed the sword to a spears, covered up that last pink parts on the tail, and mounted it all on a base.

Tell me what you think. Is there anything missing? I've rushed this whole project quite a lot here in the end so I might have missed something obvious.

Looks pretty boss to me, I don't see any glaringly obvious err, or any small one for that matter. Looks cool though.

As for it's paint job (I didn't bother to read everything, so I'm jumping to conclusions) I like the idea of the yellow w/ black stripes, but I think it might be better if it was a Yellow-to-orange gradient, or yellow & another colour as the base flesh, and then have the strips be either pure black, or also fade into a colour, or perhaps be lined/highed with a colour (Orange/purple could go well with each other, added to the yellow/black respectively). Just a thought; Also that dart frog is exactly what my friend painted his Skinks like in his lizardmen army lol.. but more yellow than orange.

Or as an alternative, have the yellow/black stripe thing going, but then have the yellow fade to a pale/flesh colour (Or anything you want) on the belly, making that characteristic pattern you see on some animals (Reptiles often, as with snakes or lizards).

Thanks for the input Twag. I was planing on painting him with a very black black. Which includes a bit of Space Wolves Gray. I've never tried this technique on something this big before and am really curious on how it will look, so I think I'll stick with it. The yellow will probably have a orange/borownish hue to it, so don't you worry. Never liked that cold yellow some people use with black, I want it warmer, more like this than like this.

Also I just had the idea of adding mushrooms to his back and hind legs, what do you guys think of this?

Gobbos do like them some mushrooms.. although it might be hard to figure how they'd stay on his hind legs, with all that hopping he's surely doing

But actually, in all seriousness, I think you should consider how you want the model to look from a colour perspective, because adding mushrooms will be adding additional colours to the model (rather than just his yellow/orange and black), so it could help to bring peoples eyes to different points of the model, but at the same time, if you don't want there to be more colour and visual activity on him I'd leave them off; That said, I think it'd probably be a pretty good idea, especially if you added a little patch on the hind of his right left (The lifted one) as well as a patch on his back, and possibly a small patch on the left front corner of the base (Left from behind him) or not even a patch of mushrooms necessarily but something in the same range of colours as the 'shrooms to make a little bit of activity to follow with the eyes and make a focal point.

I should mention I have no idea what I'm talking about, so don't listen to me :ghost::ghost:

But you got a point Twag. I'm usually pretty bad at limiting my colour pallet, leaving the mushrooms of would help to do just that. So I think that's what I'll do, there are enough details and stuff on the guy as it is. And anyway there will be more squigs in the future, maybe I'll give them some mushrooms.

I want to thank every one who came with suggestions, I appreciate it all. Then I want to thank Desfer again for he is the one who came up with the pattern and colour I used. Thanks mate, I would never have thought of it without your help, and it looks freaking awesome, have a rep.

EDIT: Also I have a new issue, the eyes. I thinking either turquoise of cold yellow (with cat pupils). Any ideas?

I'm just glad I've found a scheme that pleases me, and allowed me to try a new painting method for black.

I'd go with the yellow for the eyes. As you said, limiting the colours can be everything. Unless you made turquoise a spot colour across the army, in which case it would tie in nicely, but I doubt you'll do that somehow...

You could go for the classic, deep red eyes that glow. With the new citadel khorne glaze, that might work really well.

If you want it to look funny as well, you can add bee wings and then the colour scheme will make it look like a crazy bee-squig.

Perhaps the eyes could be a cream, stony colour to prove that this thing wasn't natural.

Looks great!! A dark gray or black glaze could probably help unify the colors and make it look even better. As for the eyes, i'll borrow some song lyrics from one of my favorite movies (my avatar gives a clue about it :tongue: ): "Teeth ground sharp and eyes glowing red". Btw, how did u highlight black? I hate painting black. Personally, black and white are the most difficult colors to paint o_o Thanks for the rep

Disturbing idea with the bee wings Dread King, disturbing. But then again why the hell not, might do it on some later squig, I'm already planing on doing one as pikachu

About the red eye. I'm not really keen on glowing eyes, as I want to keep him natural, not magical. But I could go for reds, but I still want the cat pupils, though they would probably end up more orange to make sure the pupils show. But just as Cborn pointed out, I should try to limit my colour pallet, I'll see if I can make the orange/red eyes into a spot colour by having something else done in the same colour (for instants the tiny squig in the goblins belt).

The black was highlighted using mixes of chaos black and space wolves grey, finished by pure space wolves grey. I then shaded it with red/purple washes. I can't take credit for the technique as I learned it from some former Golden Daemon winners website (can't find it now however).

Also, that is a great movie Desfer :tongue:

What colours do you intend to unify with the black glaze Desfer? The highlights on the black or the edge between yellow and black.
