I read people are dismissing her as a simple bedsheet ghost, I actually like her and may find some use for her. All those flat areas just beg for some freehands!

Still, I am VERY surprised that she's not the last one revealed. I would expect the Mortarch to be last, not the person on a flying horse. But seeing how GW is suggesting speculation about their identity, it's probably someone we already know, maybe someone connected with the new Black Coach? Maybe some vampire from the Old World turned ghost?

Abhorash confirmed?! There was a very loose rumour of him on some sort of dragon during the end times. Just wishful thinking I know.

So the new Mortarch of Grief has been revealed:

The Mortarch of Grief Unveiled! - Warhammer Community

AoSMortrach-June13-LadyOlynder1eh.jpg
Going by the name of Lady Olynder, what are your thoughts?

The description for me sounds a bit like an uber-banshee and she'll certainly be a decent caster by the description. It will be interesting to see her rules.

As for the model, I can't make my mind up on it. Floaty and spectral attendants = cool. The sheet/veil over the head comes across a bit off, cheesy maybe?

It's quite a simple looking model, that seems easy to paint. Might even get away with just the nighthaunt flame over a white undercoat! Glad it's a New character really and not another one from the old world (bar one) though.

Not my favorite model, though I like her more than I though I would from the silhouette. The veiled skull is cool, though her head seems a tough too large for her body. She's a bit statically posed, and doesn't do enough with that huge base, and looks to suffer from some fragile/wobbly thinbit connections, but most of that can be fixed up with some scenic basing. I like the rose thorn motif, which should tie her reasonably well into the existing death line and in particular the graveyard scenery kit.

Though I was excited by the rumors that Isabella might be returning as an important character in her own right, I'm glad that the mortarch of Grief actually turned out to be an entirely new character. Death in AoS desperately needs new characters, imo, and if Isabella does ever return I'd prefer a characterization that actually moves her forward rather than making 'sad for vlad' her defining character trait.

Other than that, there's not too much to say about Olynder yet, at least not until we see her rules & full backstory, but for now I'm reasonably interested. All in all, she seems pretty cool, imo.

I do really like the model, however in comparison to the rest of the new range, she is my least favorite. But I will save final judgement till I see one in person. Like many GW models, a paint job or presentation of the model can drastically change first impressions.

I also really like the model. She reminds me somewhat of Miss Haversham as a concept. I'll be interested to see what her rules are.

Well this is cool we get both the glaivewraiths and new banshees as easy to build kits which will be cheap ways to get even more awesome Nighthaunt models, I wonder what other easy to build kits we will get for Death as the 40k starter set factions both got quite a few easy to build kits which were amazing ways to expand on the starter set armies

Wallets going to take a hit with this new release lol. There is a different pic. Of the mortarch floating around from GW that has the roses done in red with her robes being a tad bit greyer. Makes her look brighter and more defined than this pic. Question now is the third a known or new character. Have to say so far the least appealing to me is the new banshees. I like the look of the last one, fits the myths better.

The new bits have drawn me back to the great "ever after" as a force. I've dusted off my old WFB army ready to update it because of how appealing these are as a concept. They remind very much of the Council Of Nagash from TVC, many years ago.

This model is the one that drew me back in. L. The thought of whatever is under that veil being so hideous it could shatter as man's soul is such a wonderful and delicious concept to play with. Nagash is so lenient that whoever is under the veil must have somehow been worse to Nagash than Mannfred (which is an impressive feat)
My only gripe with it is I don't like the handmaidens.

You're a bit late to the party DoN: New Nighthaunts - Carpe Noctem;). Any objections to merging this topic to the existing one, so that we don't have the discussion in two places?

I think at this stage I'm about 4 years or so late XD Of course feel free to merge the topics

@Voltaire! Now we're talking about old school members returning...I wonder who is still active and remembers when you were admin? XD

I still think I'll reserve judgement until I've seen the full fluff and rules, but I'd agree it looks promising. It is also good that GW are fleshing out the death characters, so hopefully here's to GW building it up to full nine

Topics merged.

The Banshees look fantastic and I'd be very tempted to invest in a box of them. The Glaivewraiths are like a cross between the Death of Rats and Skaven. I'm not sure how well that works for me.

They look interesting enough to bring me out of retirement and get me painting (and buying, and maybe even PLAYING) AOS, so props there. I've always liked painting ghosts and these are some nice ghosts. Coherent aesthetic across the army but the bits that are meant to stand out still stand out. From what I've seen they play in a way I like too: resilient and synergistic and actually getting involved for a scrap.

That which is dead, eh @Disciple of Nagash ? I've genuinely only recognised you but I'm also older and more likely to forget things now!

One thing that is getting me more excited about this release is the new myrmourn banshees. The explosion of Nagashs psyche means that the future potential of Nighthaunt as a faction is quite limitless.

Rules-wise, the glaivewraiths seem very lackluster. The banshees on the other hand have a lot of offensive power, especially when you start buffing them up, but are SUPER vulnerable, at 20 points per wound. But they are summonable, which helps if you take them as allies in LoN, and will probably be useful in nighthaunt lists as well.

Even if they're not great in game, though, they look great, and are actually pretty cheap on terms of real world money, at leadt by GW standards. Worse comes to worst, I'll still probably get a box, and just use them as regular banshees.

There was some renewed interest for Death after the release of Flesh Eater Courts, but nothing compared to the growing excitement for Legions of Nagash and the new Nighthaunts.
We have finally new models, new rules and new abilities…. no wonder old players may be appealed at the idea of terrorize again the living, and (as always happens when there's a big brand new product) certainly new players will join our ranks.

Yep. Rules are one thing but they're not something tactile that you can spend pots of money on and put together and shove around a table. I feel like all the Death releases so far have been attempts to shift dead product: this is actual stimulus, putting new stuff out and trusting curiosity to lead people from there.

I think it's very helpful the release of the box with Nighthaunts and SCE. Many players that already collect SCE will buy half of it, and their friends that are no interested in SCE will pick the other half of the box, beginning Death: i know the pre-orders in my town (4 boxes and only 2 were made by "old" undead players, and one it's obviously mine), and we have two guys that are going to start Nighthaunts exactly in this way.

Now that's a crazy big post, thanks @Unas the slayer for sharing it! (I still can't get their mail notifications to work, so having someone share it here is a very good thing)

I really like the idea of making faction-specific spells, even if the sigmarhammer tornado is even more over-the-top than usual. That chest with spooky skeleton heads is pretty awesome. Of course, I am saying this, from a hobby perspective - I don't like it from the gameplay perspective, this seems like yet another thing that needs to be bought to stay on the edge and not be left out... I wonder if GW even allows the possibility to use some cheap markers for those spells...

Also, I will be totally getting those grimghast reapers, finally I could build that elusive cairn wraith unit! That sigmarine hero doesn't look that bad too! And that artwork too, just sweet, GW is really getting back there artistically!
