Maybe you bought those models for the wrong reasons. If you bought them to "compete" and "win" instead of for the enjoyment of modelling, painting and converting them, then having a game or two every now and then, then maybe you entered the hobby for the wrong reasons too.

Powergaming is a disease, I think. the Win at All Costs mentality is clearly unsupported by GW, and I agree with them - the obsession with being competitive in a tabletop game is ridiculous, and I always hated the tournament mindset and the obsession with bending the rules. So while you may feel rejected by GW, I actually really like their change in approach.

I bought most of them because they look pretty, not sure what your rant about power gaming comes from.

It's interesting being told to not whine by the one person whining the most before the rules. What was this game, an abomination?

So I've given it a try as @najo suggested and I've watched a few bat reps on AoS, and it's not as horrible as I first thought.
My biggest issue is, why not release this as another game system instead of replacing WHFB? They could have kept the square bases (as they keep saying the bases don't matter) and used it as a way into the mass battle style game.
Instead now once you get over a certain size of units the game becomes difficult and slow, rather than moving a few units around on movement trays your having to move around dozens of models individually, which works for skirmish, but not anything bigger.

Some of the rules changes are nice battle shock, hero phase etc. But magic has a lot to be desired and a lot of other stuff is just lazy.

If GW had still supported WHFB and ran AoS as a way of getting into it and to have small quick skirmish games I'd be all in, that's what people have been crying out for, I just think they've missed a huge opportunity here.

Maybe because many people have that great plastic Wight King on foot? He has a shield and why not?!

And he looks even better with a kebab stick slid down his left side and a banner conversion.

His banner power (essentially 6+ regeneration, 9" range whilst moving, 18" range when planted) is the only reason I'd take him really. And that's not trying to powergame, in light of the above conversation, it is, in my eyes, more about enjoying the synergy between the undead force.

Aye, that's possible, but I'd rather use the old metal WK on foot for this purpose, or the mounted one on the skeletal steed. Plastic WK will be way too overdetailed with this.

That's also true. It is, perhaps, their try to make people buy the Forge World WK with banner for this purpose.

I have the forgeworld banner bearer although I'm 50/50. I've got a white king in plastic ripe for conversion and I think the converted one, with say the ragged banner form the Ogre box and some zombie trophies etc could look great.

Aye, I think so also. Ogres do have good banners (and more than one, which is important), but for the plastic WK it's not that good due to his pose and weapons. It's more suitable to make one from the Black Knights box - it will be good, with a banner and on the steed. Or if to make a great standard behind the king with the help of the base being made bigger and wider by making some mini-diorama on it. Variants, variants... Anyway, a true hobbyist is always encouraged to make new conversions and changes and not to go somewhere else. If the round bases of the starter forces will not be put in the new releases in the future, all will be quite good in my book.

Well, I have read the rules and our warscrolls a few times now, and there is a lot of things I don't like in there apart from the no points value. For example:
- shooting: You can shoot at a unit, and then charge a different one. And now you can shoot into combat, or shoot with a unit that is in combat, and you can still target any unit you want to. I haven't seen anything that prevents you from doing that.
- battleshock phase: There is no winners or losers in combat. If you take casualties, you have to take the test. It doesn't even matter if you have wiped out the enemy unit. And now you have to add up all casualties you suffered during the turn, form magic, shooting and combat, and then take the test.
- cover works a very funny way. You have to be within or on a terrain piece. But if you are just standing behind a house or something, and your opponent can see one model from the unit, you can shoot at it without penalties.
- heroes can't join units, so they are really easy to take out with ranged attacks.

All these things just look silly to me. I know they wanted short, and simple rules, but this is just... I don't know.

Our "invocation of nehek" is contained within the banners of each unit. If a unit has a standard bearer, it can resurrect D6 models in the Hero phase.

With the Reliquary's power, DEATH units that are struck heal D3 wounds. Other unit types suffer D3 wounds.

I don't see how that could be clearer.

@Rob. Skeletons haven't been completely renamed Deathrattlers... That just seems to be the name of the battalion formation... in answer to one of the queries on your blog.

There's still some very nice synergy; corpse carts, large hordes of zombies (30=optimal), wight king, necromancer.

Ethereal units got nuked HARD though. All ethereal does now is allow uninhibited movement through terrain and ignore RENDING from weapons. Mundane weapons can now damage them.

Hexwraiths got kinda nerfed in some ways and buffed in others. They now actually have a 4+ save, AND have two wounds. So they will likely stay around a little longer. On the other hand, their spectral hunter rule got nerfed so that they only deal damage to the unit they moved over, on a mere 6. Boooooo.

Essentially ethereal is now a 4+ ward save

I just don't know anymore. I was very optimistic before the war scrolls, now my head hurts.
It's funny how some of us have switched views on this since the war scrolls came out.
One upshot is we might see plastic Blood Knights given how crazy they've become.

There are already plastic blood knights on the market, I have 5

Okay been reading a lot of this thread and have a few thoughts:

1. there is nothing to say you can't still rank and file your units, I spoke to someone in the workshops and your own troops don't need to be a minimum distance from each other so you can still movement tray up as normal

2. It makes no sense that you can take whatever you want, where would be the incentive to ever take certain unit types, surely a combination of troop types and wounds would make the most sense for balancing armies, for example: 10 lord wounds, 100 core wounds, 30 special unit wounds, 30 rare unit wounds (balanced without putting any thought into it)

Whilst I still would prefer an update to 8th as list creating was one of my favourite parts of the hobby, this game could work if they sort out the army selection. Otherwise I could just take all 500 models I have and dump them on the table each time.

It's what you may do freely and you should certainly.

In 40k it's called Apocalypse and it exists there for a long time. Welcome to the present :D

In Apocalypse mode of playing - no, there are not. They just use all their existing forces with superheavy vehicles and the like and some new rules like D-strength for superheavy and so on and play. Very funny, very epic.

People like you will never understand Age of Sigmar. You don't seem to understand that it's all about SOCIALISING AND HAVING FUN. It's not about powergaming, it's not about nitpicking, it's not about being a dick. It's about having fun with models you collect and paint for the enjoyment of it.

If you enjoyed playing in tournaments, being competitive and wanting to win all the time, bought models that gave you an advantage, or enjoyed writing army lists and min/maxing, this is NOT the game for you!

Go play KoW, Oldhammer or Warmachine if you don't like it. In the meantime, I'll be having fun with AoS.

Cover - You need to read the scenery warscroll. If you're unit is all on the one side of a wall/fence and within 3" of it, and the enemy on the opposite side, then they receive cover benefits.

Some heroes have rules that effectively give them "Look Out Sirs" e.g. our Necromancer has "minions of the dead", if he's within 3" of a unit of zombies, ghouls, skeletons etc, on a 4+ they take the wound instead.

I do agree that shooting needs FAQd. I don't see an issue with shooting into combat, but wounds should be allocated randomly then... evens it hits opponents, odds it hits your own men in the combat. Shooting whilst IN combat is silly.

My main gripe so far is multi unit combats are very messy and an initiative step would clear this all up. For example, I was playing my Sigmarites against Khorne, I had one unit of 5 liberators in combat with the Khorne Lord, then a further single one man liberator left over from a previous unit. The previous unit had also had the Khorngoth beast whatever its called in combat. My five man unit makes its attacks... Then his turn to make attacks back. Since the beast was in combat with the other unit, and that unit had been split in combat with the Lord, he could make the beast pile in to the combat, then attack with both his lord and the beast. And it just felt messy and unclear. Blaergh.

Essentially ethereal is now a 4+ ward save

Nope. "Mortal wounds" will still hurt your cairn wraith etc. You just ignore the "rending" of a weapon, I.e. against normal damage it will always be a 4+. But as I said, Mortal Wounds are wounds that don't allow saves.

I thought going to the tournaments involved socialising and I often put away far too many beers whilst playing 5000 point games with dream lists just for a laugh. Also play in local year long campaigns but without competition your basically succumbing to the over protective baby foot approach that people have towards everything these days, champions strive for competition not the "I took part medal" at sports day. So get of your high horse Undying Scourge.

It's well known that GW have never supported the tournament scene. With AoS, they are more firmly pinning their colours to the "pretzel, chill out" corner of tabletop gaming. Clearly they want their product to be about good times, beers, chilling out. They're not trying to train a whole cadre of super intense wannabe Napoleons.

You can take beers to the tournament scene, once saw a guy get so drunk he had to be taken to hospital after day one, he literally pis**d on himself at the table haha

Yeah, it's an interesting rule set, and definitely for players who are looking to field like, 5-6 years worth of collecting models on a single table. My favorite (Of course personally) is 'Nids vs anything, because I have literally been collecting Tyranids for over 10 years, and... well I have 10 years worth of 'Nids. Although I have never fielded any sort of Apox game, since I have no place to in my home, and my friends live no where near me :ghost:

I don't think it's silly. It's different, and you could change the rules to suit your view (I've seen nothing about difficult terrain yet, but I haven't looked at the Terrain WarScroll) of how it should work. But personally I feel like as long as everyone is playing with the same rules, it shouldn't be too bad. It might be bad, I'll have to see some armies like Wood Elves which are known for their shooting, maybe that makes it very bad.

But if you look at it like this, a dedicated shooting army or uint get's their attack once every full round, and dedicated melee get their attacks once per player turn. So Melee is winning out vs Shooting units when they finally close the gap, and more than likely doing severe damage to them despite the fact that they may still be able to shoot.

Besides have you seen Lord of The Rings? Clearly Legolos attacks with his bow even in melee, if that's not proof in favor of this, I don't know what could be.

Also for the Melee situation, I am a little unclear here in your example. You had two units of Liberators (One of which was one man) and they had a Lord and the Monster thing in combat? And somehow they were close to each other or something? But when you do combat, as far as I've read, you go back and forth between players rolling per unit fielded. So he would never get to attack with both the Lord and the Monster at once. But if you're just confused that the Monster gets to attack at all, I mean, as long as it was within 3" of something when it got selected to attack, I don't see the confusion.

Simple paint images may help clear this up, if it's not too much trouble?

Those things are not worthy of FAQ off the bat. Those things are what has changed drastically. None of those make the game functionally impossible to play, they are simply observations of "What I don't like that changed". To address a few of them:

– You are not told to agree with your opponent what size battle you want to play (unlike 8th edition)
Well we also are not encouraged to continue breathing, but I take that in stride as well. If a player can't understand concepts that children develop in early life, such as the fact that if you aren't being friendly, you won't make friends, well they won't have players to play against. And balanced fights can be fun. Have you heard of being the Underdog?

– Unit sizes are either 1 or 1+. Taking a lot of 1-model units typically gives you a pile of free champion upgrades.
– Models in the same unit must be no more than 1″ apart. This is measured model-to-model and not base-to-base, so it might be closer than you think.
— I put down some Night Goblins and it turns out they have to be within 0.5″ of the guy in front to be in formation.
– It says that unit that end up out of formation must reform the next turn they move, but doesn’t actually explain what that means, or what happens if they can’t get back in formation.
Well, I think most players will take for granted the concept of formation and the unit coherency to be together. As far as the unit distance measurements, the game is pretty loose by it's nature (I think I've heard some people flipping out about that anyways), so anyone who tries to say "Uh your models aren't within 1 inch of each other" when they are fractionally larger gaps, well see the first response.

– You measure to and from the model, not the base. For extra reach, model your troopers with arms and weapons outstretched.
This is honestly the largest piece of fiction that has come from the concerned parties. The rules state "No part of the model may move further than the model’s Move characteristic." Anyone who pretends they can move a unit sideways a full distance and "Pivot" on the spot to swing their mighty sword arm out a distance to further their charge range is both wrong, and an dolt not worth playing. Nothing about the model effects the "reach" of them, because by default you are measuring from the same spot every time, it's only in the imagined trespasses of non-sportsmanlike players that this comes to light.

– Pile-in moves can leave models who haven’t fought yet stranded and unable to fight as they are suddenly more than 3″ from their enemies.
Once again if you simply look at the rules.. "When you pile in, you may move each model in the unit up to 3" towards the closest enemy model. " Every model in the unit is going to be piling in, not "the models within 3 inches". So again this is an imagined trespass caused by over active imaginations failing to read. When you look at a brownie, if you came into it thinking you were going to find sh$t, you're going to have a hard time not finding sh&t even if it's not there.

It's honestly embarrassing how unthoughtful people are being. We're gamers, you know, those people who have to use critical thinking to deploy armies and utilize tactics? But we can't bother to actually read, or form opinions that are not slander and doom saying? I mean even the title of that Blog Post is simply designed to stir hatred and fear, and make negative impressions on people. For things that are both lies, and not issues. None of the things mentioned needs FAQed, they simply are different than what we have had in the past. If you want to launch a Witch Hunt, then sure we found someone who is different when we went looking for our friend. But are they about to kill us? Probably not. This is just blindness, fear and irrational thoughts coming to the surface. Try considering some things, and once you've actually decided that yes, things are different (See: not broken or in need of FAQ) from the game we once knew then, yes you can feel free to not play.

And as far as Loyalty and "GW is screwing me over". That is something that can't be contested, because they never made a promise to provide what you are looking for. They have always maintained they make models not games. And they have always sucked at making rules. This is just them making the lightest possible rules in hopes they don't f#%k it up again.
