Age of sigmar

  • The masquerade of murder returns! A new game of Vampires Amongst Us has begun. Unmask the killers, trust no one, and try to survive the night. Find out more and sign up now!
Mad 'At will flay me alive if i post it.

Don't tempt me ;)

On a more serious note though. These images are a bit tricky, and I am unsure about whether they really are copyrighted. I mainly figure better safe than sorry, cause we certainly don't want GW's lawyers after us. But if you can convince me that the material isn't copyrighted, then feel free to post. This has all gotten a lot stranger since AoS I believe, previously pretty much everything was copyrighted, but now there are free rules and stuff all over the place so I don't really know anymore.

The rule is that if GW owns the copyright, regardless of whether it's free and downloadable on their site, posting it anywhere is a violation of their copyright. Always better to be safe in my view as a result, as they do enforce their copyright strongly.

On the ongoing issue of the development of Age of Sigmar, I'd actually like to see them make some of the basic narrative material free of charge. It seems though that this is only going to appear in the paid books and other materials, which is disappointing.

Today I have seen a WD page describing the upcoming Sylvaneth battletome.

It features:
1. Sylvaneth command traits.
2. Sylvaneth artefacts of power.
3. A Spell Lore of six new spells unique to Sylvaneth spellcasters.

It seems that all future battletomes are goinng to include that sort of things.

Of all these, I am most excited about the return of Spell Lores, I was missing them.

Wait for updates, I guess? While not a confirmed or announced thing, it's commonly supposed that the rules being free online, or cheap in the compendiums, is to allow for regular updates without leaving players feeling like they wasted a lot of money on outdated rules. It would not surprise me at all to see new compendiums with revised faction traits, items, and spell lists published next year.

For now, though? Fortunately, our default traits and items in the general's handbook are pretty nice overall. And our only published battletome so far, the fleash-eaters, aren't especially magic-dependent, so the rule of one doesn't hit them too hard, even with the lack of a spell lore of their own.

As for the rest of the faction - yeah, rules of one and the summoning restriction are heavy blows. I haven't looked closely at the points values of other factions to see if the effect of those restrictions have been taken into account. Nagash in particular seems a little overpriced once you consider those restrictions, but then again the impact of the casting & summoning nerfs seems to have been taken into account with Arkhan's points cost, which is fully 100 points cheaper than the next cheapest Mortarch, so maybe it will be ok.

For those who want to lean heavy on magic - it is part of the whole undead theme after all, I recommend acquiring or converting some of the tomb kings statue units - sphinxes, ushabti, necropolis knights, and stalkers. All of those units have powerful healing spells, which shouldn't suffer from the summoning nerf. Necroknights and Stalkers can even be raised above starting strength by them, and sphinxes and necroknights are very respectable units to begin with. That should get you some extra useful spells to cast to get around the rule of one which don't require you to set aside points for summoning.

Tomb Kings are hard to come by these days, some conversion/counts-as ideas:

FW had some concept art for a tomb kings giant animated beetle thing that never materialized, but Alarielles beetle might make a solid foundation for a giant scarab conversion that could reasonably be run as one of the sphinxes. You'd need to find a use for alarielle (trade to a chaos player looking for daemon prince conversion fodder?), and it would require a lot of work to remove all the plants and vines, but it's an idea.

Buy and assemble some hexwraiths, and use the leftover black knight arms and upper torsos to convert undead riders for demigriph knights, and paint the griphs as ghosts or animate statues. Should make for a respectable vamp count themed necroknight stand-in. I actually have necroknight models, and I'm tempted to do this, as the snake surfers are a bit silly....

Not GW store legal, but Mantic is putting out a not-tomb-kings range in the next month or two, with some halfway-decent not-ushabti, bow option included.

I am looking forward when the generals handbook is released, it's up for preorders now on NZ site but I wonder if it'll be on the age of sigmar app to download like the other battle tomes I hope so. This should prove interesting as most people in my area refuse to play AOS because it has no rules this may change it, also the one spell rule is good since it will stop summoning spam but sucks since it is only one. One thing that supprised me is the price $50nz for the generals book I was expecting $100+

I agree. And I'm very happy to see the generals handbook up much earlier than previously rumored, in time for people to get their own copy and dig through it before the summer campaign starts.

On the other hand, the rules to this game are even less free than they were before. 'Free Rules' was already a bit of a stretch, what with the scenarios - which the game really needed to function at all - not being free, and the formations and times of battle not free either.

Now the new sylvaneth book is up for preorder, and it's advertised as having exclusive rites of battle, command traits, spells, and artifacts, leading me to believe that those in the generals compendium won't be separately available for free either.

Malisteen, I love the idea of Alarielle's Beetle as a giant scarab construct! She's a nice model by herself, and I wasn't really sold on the idea of her atop the big bug, so this is a nice solution for the kit.

I really want Alarielle but she's so expensive. and I thought Nagash and the blood knights were a lot. Good thing I have no interest in buying Archaeon.

Yeah. I love her idea and fluff. But she's got sub par abilities and the spite revenants which she is supposed to be fielded with are inferior to the tree revenants. Also she can have two different builds but it's random which of the two will be buffed each turn all there's basically no way to make her always optimum.

I really wanted to get Drycha back but I really needed her to be more competitive :-(

I haven't looked at her points cost, so that might sour things, but if you can get her in amongst enemy infantry she's brutal. Flitterfuries is like a free arcane bolt at every nearby unit, squirmlings will wipe out 2/3 of one single wound unit within 10" of her, and she gets a bunch of decent attacks in close combat. And that's all baseline stuff. Her moodiness buffs her abilities at random, but it doesn't debuff anything, you still do it all, you're just not sure which you're going to do better.

Defensively, she's got a 3+ save, but not too many wounds, and her abilities get significantly weaker as she takes damage, so if you let the enemy target her before she gets close then she'll lose a lot of her threat, but she does have good speed, and the faction seems to have some healing abilities. Her spell's kind of meh, but sylvaneth get their own lore, so there's probably something better to give her (self healing or defensive boosts would be most ideal, but if none of the spells are good for her then settling for mystic shield to give herself a 2+ save is a perfectly acceptable fallback option).

But yeah, get her in amongst some large squads with most of her health intact, and between her shooting and melee attacks, she shouldn't disappoint.

I won't defend the spites, though. Really do think both they and the tree revenants should have been 2 wound infantry, and offensively the spites are just... bleh. Oh, well, there's always dryads, treemen, and the new hunters.

One thing that should prove interesting is how these new traits and spell lores etc will affect the older battle tome? Will GW update them or add them onto the app for existing ones as a small add on likewise with the Grand Alliances books. It's cool GW are getting back into points and more army specific rules but would of been nice if they started much earlier at the start of AOS first release as it will leave other alliances out of the loop

I expect the previous battletomes will just have to make due with the generic grand alliance traits and items for the foreseeable future, which is honestly fine, since the generic abilities are actually pretty great. As for spell lores, I'm anticipating a future magic expansion with lores for the various alignments and possibly some magic variant rules, something akin to the old battle magic expansion in early editions of oldhammer, to appear sooner or later.

Not only can they all use wither, they can all use wither on the same target to stack the effect, though natural rolls of 1 will still fail to wound regardless. The rules of one for spell casting very specifically only apply to spells.

This is true, and kind of sad, especially since Death has no non-wizard priests :(
