Gatti!!! Finally someone logical, great post, my Chemistry teacher would love you, you seem to be a natural for doing Chemistry coursework :P Well done.
As to the rest of you, there is no way 1 model is RELIABLY killing a DP, even 1 TG. So STOP THROWING VAMP BUILDS AT HIM. You are still used to the good ol' warhammer, where we could make a build to counter ANYTHING. Well that is not the case, warhammer has changed. There are things we need half the army to kill and actually that is quite realistic, for a deamon. We can't make a build to singlehandedly kill a DP, apparently even a dragon will fail. So, I ask you, what else makes us special? Ethereals. Now, I have NO idea if this thing has magical attacks, maybe it does but if not or if the build the enemy is using has no magical weapon then we spam ethereals. Wraiths, banshees, hosts. You name it we throw 500+ points of things he can't hurt at him. He may use magic to kill them but that is usually not as reliable as magical combat. Correct me if he being a deamon has magical attacks. If he does ignore the above xD and throw 3 varghulfs at him (or 3 units of 11(alltogether) vargheists) .

I'm so glad that I added the 'without using terrorghiests' clause to this thread. Otherwise I'd be inundated with people suggesting terrorghiests... :innocent:

You didn't exclude Banshees. ;)

Good idea, Johnny, but you've got to watch out for good dispelling and common sense by your opponent (also known as sunblock).

I can do a very quick summary of your post, you have this build which I could never see being used in a all comers list because of how many points the model would cost. The net Result of this 450-600pts model is it does 0.2 more wounds than a daemon prince? so correct me if I'm wrong but thats nothing right? (as you either wound or you don't). Even so, the amount of extra wounds you do is actually less than the chance of it regaining a wound from soulfeder (which is something you have tried to remove from the equation via your comparison to the hunger which simply isn't a valid comparison). You could very well knock it down by a couple of wounds and it finds the weakest unit to as many wounds as possible simply to regain those lost wounds

Your then basically telling me you need to invest further points towards the model? so What, you looking at up to a 3rd of you (maybe more) just to kill a single model, is that correct?

You then throw in a random comment about killing one twice with the build, I fail to see how this is data, we have no information on dice rolls. This in turn would tell us if you had simply had goof dice rolls or you opponent had bad rolls (or a mixture of the two).

Fact is, using a vampire lord to take on a daemon prince is very risky, not only because of the rough equal killing power but the effect of losing him (such as your terrors dying from crumble with only leadership 4(?).

I thought TG leadership was ld 5 or 6, though correct me if I'm wrong. It's been too long since I played a nice big game with a TG or two.

No, Logan is right - it's Ld4.

That's why, again as stated 1000 times, it's not worth risking our lord against the prince. Simply put, he can be built into an extremely killy and resilient general of choas that is also a level 4 (sounds a lot like the vamipre lord.... O.O )
Except he can do it almost cheaper and in a way...better than us....

Soooo yeah, I'd avoid combat altogether with him, unless I knew I could pin him and kill him THAT turn or very soon after; since once in combat he has the chance to start healing. I believe Johnny pointed out Lore of Metal would at the very least have high wounding ratios on him. Unless he took DBG then scratch that idea. Shadow seems like a good option- debuff him until youre relatively sure you can deal enough wounds that he can't save them all. Or death- debuff Ld and have at him with snipes and screams.

We have our options, but an epic Vampire vs Daemon showdown isn't the most appealing to me. Too much for us to lose. WoC would just shrug if their DP died, they are still strong as hell lol. And if they're lucky, some champ winning a challenge will offer them the chance at another Prince...plus you know, the warshrine's bound spell and extra D6 on eye of the gods and also chosen's extra D6 at the beginning of the game (they get 4D6 drop 2 if by the shrine at the game's start, yes?). Eff that, I'll just field my WoC army as well :rofl2:

You have never seen a BK bus list have you? My build isn't very different from the typical blender vamp taken by anyone who runs a BK bus. He is the most effective blender lord at 2500 pts. It was also taken by the Maltese ETC Vampire player. He won one of the ETC singles tournaments last year. He also played on the Malta ETC team which placed third. Which means hes a better player than either of us. I would hardly count that as "no one takes it." Maybe say "I wouldn't take it."

Also, interesting that you say 600 pts is too much for a character when we are discussing killing a daemon prince (fully kitted is just under 600 vps, similar cost as my vamp build). The prince gets an extra wound but doesn't get a lookout sir from cavalry. Taking him vs taking a daemon prince is similar.

Okay, you're wrong. You are misunderstanding what statistics means. I will rephrase, in 100 rounds of combat, the vampire lord will do 96 wounds to the prince. In 100 rounds of combat the daemon prince will fail beguile 58 times and pass 42 times. Combined, this means the prince will do just under 75 wounds to the vampire lord from those 100 rounds of combat. This correlates to regaining 12 wounds, which still leaves the vampire ahead. That does not mean the prince will never kill the vampire, what it means is in the long run the vampire will do more wounds than he takes in that match up.

logan054 said:

I purposely left it out because if I included the odds of soulfeeder, I would also have to include the odds of our vampire regaining a wound from lore attribute. Remember, we have much higher capacity to heal our characters than chaos does, and as the daemon prince, on average, will do 1 wound at most to our vampire lord, he will survive two rounds of combat to get back to our magic phase so we can heal him. I left out soulfeeder because it would skew data without considering the effect of magic on our lord. But as I pointed out above, the number of wounds regained by the prince, if we subtract that from the total number of wounds the vampire deals, he still comes out on top over a long time. The math doesn't lie.

logan054 said:

wouldn't that be a win? if he charged into a unit of zombies, I would consider that a win for me, personally. Then I could use my vampire elsewhere. He would get no argument from me.

You seem to be blind to the fact that a terrorgheist or a death caster isn't exactly left out of most lists. They are there already in 90% of the lists. It isn't adding extra stuff to the list to handle a prince, its using what is already there. The main thing I am suggesting that is added is for beguile to be added on the blender vamp (which many lists already include the vamp without beguile).

I forget the exact rolls, but nothing sticks out in my head as abnormally good/bad. The math tells us it was an expected outcome. The tests determine it was achievable in a game and therefore a realistic calculation. Together, they provide evidence. The fact that it was repeatable lends it more strength. As I continue to run it, I will get more data. This is how science is done. Its called the scientific method. It seems to work in science, and has worked for the past four thousand years or so as a method to test a theory, I see no reason it wouldn't apply here.

Oh, you will not get an argument there for me. I would not do it unless the prince was wounded. Preferably, I would try to death snipe or terror scream him off the table.

However, the prince flys as you have pointed out, which limits the amount of time you have to scream or snipe him. Also, the OP asked for a method to deal with him other than "terror scream and pray!" I would prefer he die to my terrorgheist, however as I have 1-2 turns max before he is charging something (potentially charging something important), my terror may not deal enough wounds before he can charge. That is why I added beguile to my blender vamp (who was already in my army). With beguile, I have a backup plan in case the terrorgheist doesn't finish him off. That plan is to charge with my vampire. Not perfect and could come back to bite me, but it is a solution.

Pax !!! Pax !!!

I think everybody agree that charging a DP with a Lord is risky at best and pure madness if you don't know what to expect/ aren't prepared.

We are exploring ways to dealing with the DP and so far, from what i see, there's no simple, 100% guarantee to work, ways to kill it if you don't bring 2 terrorgheist on the table (and even with 2 terrorgheist, you'll need to outmaneuver your opponent)

I respect you Gatti and have read a batrep or two that you have been in. I can tell you are a very good player. But comparing ETC Warhammer and true Warhammer is like apple and oranges now. The Malta player might be very good in either system but I can't accept the argument you put forward. The rest of you points are very valid.

We have other screams besides TG. A couple-few Banshees in a unit of skeletons with a blender Vamp could likely see off the DP if the Blender vamp can survive the round where the dp charges which is easy with a skeleton champ challenging.

A couple of things:

a) Why would the DP charge that unit?

b) Surely you'd need AoDM, and probably some other negative Ld modifiers on the DP. Otherwise, you're going to be relying on a lot of luck; since each of those banshees will inflict precisely 0 wounds on average.

Why? Because this is your deathstar that he must take out to win. What's the demon prince going to do? Kill zombies?

Sure. I agree. AoDM would and should be bought. Plus your death necros can be sniping at him.

Yes, agreed. ETC is different. My point there though is that a blender vampire isn't exactly something "no one takes." If nothing else, the ETC is good for producing powerful lists (within a comp, but still good lists). The fact that a blender vamp did show up in a high placing player's list suggests it is a solid choice (that's what it means to me at least). Besides, this player won malta nationals as well uncomped with blender vamp (same build) bk bus and 2x terror (a friend of mine got 3rd with dwarfs, which is how I know).

ETC is also good for knowing what to take if you really want to cheese out... just break all the comp rules at once! :vampire3:

Either way, my point there was that that blender vamp combo isn't exactly unheard of. Many people may not put a LV 4 on him and take a LV 4 necro(death) instead, but that blender build as a whole isn't unheard of and does show up in all comers lists despite what logan suggested. That was my primary point there.

Ah, there we go again... ETC is warhammer. It plays according to exactly the same rules. It just forces you to use different ARMY BUILDS. Also, the equipment a single Vampire Lord can take isn't limited in ETC. This means that for the purpose of assezing the usefulness of a VL against a DP, there is no difference whatsoever, other than the the DP will probably not use Soul Feeder, which was left out of the equation anyway. For this isolated experiment, Gatti's math and expample is perfectly applicable. His build is also quite common in the ETC and beyond. As to the general difference; there's a reason why every country takes their best players to the ETC; 'cause their good at Warhammer, that is. Whether ETC or not ;) the fact that the best players play there, means that ETC builds and tactics are usually very high quality :)

Which all doesn't mean that pitting a VL against a DP is a good idea... Rather the opposite :P

I think I covered this originally, its the points bracket you keep referring to, 2500pts is not the most common points played for warhammer. The vast majority of games I see played are 2000pts or 2400pts In either of those points brackets it isn't a viable build because it is taking up to many points of your lord allowance and not allowing the purchase of a master necromancer who is then giving you access to a different lore. That isn't to say lore of Vampires is a bad lore (I happen to like it) but if I was playing with a competitive mindset I would rather have a master necromancer who was a lvl4 as well.

When I build my Blender lord I general find I have to drop several items and powers I would like i order to fit everything in. Simply put, for anyone not playing the game at 2500pts, you suggesting of a 450pts + vampire lord before you upgrade his magic levels simply is not viable.

Also, interesting that you say 600 pts is too much for a character when we are discussing killing a daemon prince (fully kitted is just under 600 vps, similar cost as my vamp build).

Daemon princes are not 600pts when kitted out, at the most with wings your are looking at 500pts, with M8 the wings are not a auto include upgarde. The primary difference here is of course you can make a Daemon prince kitted out simply for killing and still fit it into 1500pts, larger games allow for the magic levels. This is very different to the build you suggested, that build requires you to play 2400pts, and then, you are limited to using lore of vampires, unlike the prince, if we assume nurgle then it has access to two lores of magic. Even Nurgle is a very good lore for a daemon prince with the lore attribute alone. With the lore of nurgle one spell can buff the daemon prince up to 6-9, or be used to bebuff your opponents Toughness by D3.

Okay, you're wrong. You are misunderstanding what statistics means. I will rephrase, in 100 rounds of combat, the vampire lord will do 96 wounds to the prince. In 100 rounds of combat the daemon prince will fail beguile 58 times and pass 42 times.

I actually understand the statistics fine, I was in the top class for maths at school ;) I do remember this bit about round up as well since you don't have 0.X of a dice roll/wound in warhammer.

You would then also be required to consider the effect of the daemon prince magic, soulfeeder ability doesn't required anything other than wounding a vampire in combat. The only way a vampire can regains wounds is through magic or killing a model. With items such as skull of katan or a spell familiar which increase the chances of channeling the chance of casting successfully is reduce while increasing the chances of the chaos player getting spells they need off.

Through Lore of nurgle it is very possible to have a vampire lord to be hitting a daemon prince on a 5+ and wound on a 5/6+ Of course the nurgle player can choose between wounds and toughness through the lore attribute

wouldn't that be a win? if he charged into a unit of zombies, I would consider that a win for me, personally. Then I could use my vampire elsewhere. He would get no argument from me.

Who said anything about a target pit? I just said weak unit, essentially one he could wipe out through crumble in a turn through stomps, flaming breath and S6 attacks, that could just as easily be a chaff unit.

I never implied that they wouldn't be in list, I am talking about the percentage of your list that your directing at a single model in a all or nothing approach. With the terrors you are throwing them away unless the daemon prince has moved miles away from the rest of the list.

I forget the exact rolls, but nothing sticks out in my head as abnormally good/bad.

So it isn't data then, it is exactly the same as me talking about how I had a unit of HoC Khorne warriors wipe out most high elf army back when the HE book came out. It simply proves nothing

The math tells us it was an expected outcome.

But it doesn't, it's missing far to many variables, with you basically making excuses for not including things such as soul feeder.

Also, the OP asked for a method to deal with him other than "terror scream and pray!" I would prefer he die to my terrorgheist, however as I have 1-2 turns max before he is charging something (potentially charging something important), my terror may not deal enough wounds before he can charge. All I have simply done is point out what I feel to be flawed, I am more of a shadow debuff fan when it comes to dealing with a daemon prince. Lore of death is good however spirit leech (unless with your vampire lord) doesn't seem like the best option. Depending on marks I would rather use those on things like BSB's to reduce the control he has over frenzy.

Damage limitation does seem like the best option here and using shadow to jump your lord out of combat with the daemon prince.

O'rly? So in an ETC enviroment when that chimera is behind that one inch tall hill I can shoot my cannon at it? Or I can shoot my cannon at the unit of glade guard hiding behind that stand of forest? No...don't say they play by the same rules.

They alter the ruleset significantly enough that notable situations are handled in completely different ways. And then there's the whole team aspect of it. Nope, not Warhammer. Based on Warhammer.

I didn't even broach the casting limitations or the power dice limitations in the magic phase.

If that ain't Warhammer, looks like I don't play Warhammer often :)

The hill thing is weird bc they're infinitely high, but it keeps things cut and dry when running a tourny of 100s of people. Debating whether something can see something all the time would grind things to a halt. Also, conversions are allowed at ETC, so if that rule wasn't in place some clowns would base their army in stances lower than dwarves, like zombies coming out of the ground or something.

ETC tries to eliminate the cheese, and make winning more determined by the players skill level, not dice rolls. Tis different from uncomped warhammer indeed :)
