Johnny- Crass : Return of the Brush

  • The masquerade of murder returns! A new game of Vampires Amongst Us has begun. Unmask the killers, trust no one, and try to survive the night. Find out more and sign up now!
So I am doing some painting and GSing basics at my local club for some of the newer guys. And I must say I am loving it, they have such a will to paint and learn, that I do not even see in the older painters around here. Some are becoming better than me at this point. xD

All looks great Johnny! I really like your flesh. The spirits of any sort seem too green to me, not sure if it's the pic...I prime mine white (krylon), hit with asurmen blue wash, overbrush white, wash with green, the drybrush white again.

If I ever get to adding a picture (not that I'm dumb, it's that I'm too lazy) I will.

So I have got news and pictures will be coming shortly.

First off there is a tournament in a few days... on my 6 month anniversary so I am taking my lady with me! And the word on the street is she will be buying me a coven throne:thumbsup:

Secondly I have started on my Reaper Red Dragon model and just finished two necromancers, 1 vampire, 6 skellies, 4 ghoul and 5 more zombies today!

Also I may be starting a Ogre army next month:innocent:

Well the plan is a undead ogre army

This dragon http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/red%20dragon/latest/60028

And I made her her very own pair of punk plaids (I sow and make clothing in my spare time) and then go for a nice dinner after the tourny.

*palm* Undead Ogre's........And i thought those things couldn't smell any worse.......On a side note i want that dragon D:

Behold my horrid freehand skills!

Loving your work in here mate.

Is that the Carmine Dragon from Forgeo World? I thought about using one of those with one of the pallid handmaidens from the Coven Throne kit to make a Vampiress on Dragon.

Also, you may have answered this but i didn't see, but what is the model your Ghoul King is based upon?

Some great inspirational stuff in here. Ghoul King rocks and he fits well with his little ghoul buddies. Shame about the table disaster but there is something rewarding about going crazy making terrain.

Also Devlan Mud is well deserved of the god juice title.

@Sachiel the GK is from the Rackham line if my memory serves me I got him second hand but I am pretty sure that is where he is from.

@Elzanith thanks mate though I really wish he had not been a commission as I loved that model. Though I do see him at tournaments which always makes me smile.

@Mad 'At any praise from you is good praise! And your cookie is in the mail:tongue:

@Antipodean I am flattered and I plan on doing a land of the dead table as my next one so watch this space

And Santa I would kill for freehanding tips as it is the one thing I can not get down. (Well that and NMM but yah...)

I'm not the expert at this, Jake (red) would be the best to ask.

Depending on what you're freehanding, a brush with a way fine point is good. I like my 40/0 kolinsky sable from reaper, but their 20/0 and 10/0 are good too. When I'm freehanding, it helps to practice whatever it is on something besides the mini. I used a blank base to practice my flames and my salamander heads.

I was going to try and summarize this but its better to have you read it, it will help. I reread it every now and then myself. ;)

I just need to gloat a second, because in a couple days I will be the proud owner of a Coven Throne bought by my lovely lady.

And it will be just in time too as I have to paint it up by the 21st (our anniversary and the second tournament of the season)

Freehand can be a fickle beast. The best thing you can do is take your time at it. Before I ever put any freehand on a banner, skin, or any sort of surface, I make sure to paint the object as normal. Many people, including myself, get bent out of shape about freehand before they even start; they panic about getting everything to look just right. Go into painting the piece as you would any mini. Take it one step at a time.

I usually start with basic shapes for my freehand. Identify the main shapes, and "sculpt" them into form with your brush. It could take a few layers, but take your time with it. I usually do this step with a base color of the design I'm going for. If you make a mistake, don't worry, just use some of the background color to act as an eraser.

Once the basecoat is down, you'll notice it doesn't look right. Nothing to panic about, it'll get much better when you had your shading and highlighting. Slowly work in your highlights and shadings while keeping with the overall llighting of the rest of the model. If it doesn't look right, just keep inching until it's spot on. It can take a while and takes a lot of practice, but when you'll get there, you'll be happy.

I hope this helps.

All the best,

Jake

Wow thanks Red! That is insanely helpful  Have some more rep

anywho I just came into a large amount of knights so I have forgotten the Ogre project and my third army will be brets which will be a nice change from the darkness of my VC

Nicely said. I would add from my experience it is better to mix the color with more water than you are used to when painting freehand. You can have only small drop of color on the brush without worrying about drying. Also, when you make mistake it is not as crucial because you need only a little of background color to fix it and you can 'experiment' a bit - try to make some lines in a different way etc. Of course, you have to apply several layers, but it is not as big problem once the main lines are drawn.

Hope it helps a bit ;)

Looking forward to see your models :)

Very nice job i love your stuff I can only hope to be half as good as this .... and even then thats pushing it.
