Drop the Dread Knight, or else you'll just get stuck in combat with a crappy champion and not unleash rage onto the unit he's supposed to be fighting.

The plan with my build is to avoid combat with units containing champions. xD But even if I fight them, I am virtually assured the max overkill bonus, so my opponent's troops are going to be fighting a huge uphill battle from CR alone, and if they stick around, they're going to be butchered in the follow-up round of combat once the champion's dead.

Personally, I'm thinking of trying the close-combat death master in my next battle:

Vamp Lord
Red Fury
Quickblood
Dread Knight
Ogre Blade (+2 S)
Enchanted Shield
Talisman of Preservation
Potion of Foolhardiness
Heavy Armor

So, he's putting out 5 WS9 S7 attacks (6 when you pop the potion), likely re-rolling to hit unless your opponent has ASF or godly initiative for some reason, and attacking again for each unsaved wound. He's also got the usual T5, 3+ armor save, and 4+ ward save. Add a few magic levels to taste and voila, you've got a powerful wizard who can kill a dragon by himself.

I would love to have battled Ogres last night with this build, however I went with the Vamp Lord Castewr Build... never again. This edition is fully geared toward insane Vamps shredding battle lines while a Master Necro hangs back (or 2 lvl 2 necros near an Engine) and casts.

If you throw your build in Black/Blood knights then your hexwraiths can reak havoc in the march bubble while your necros keep your army moving via van hels :)

What the hell are you talking about? Used to be you could have red fury, perma hatred re-rolls+ room for another 25 pt power, plus a sword that turns every wound you dish out into a wound regenned on your vampire, while still pulling of a 2+ save with ward. The old book was far worse in the overpowered characters department.

I agree. The reason we're seeing more fighty vamps at the moment isn't because they got appreciably better at fighting. Rather, it's because casty vamps are much more expensive now, and necro lords provide a viable discount solution to your magic problems, while the new army crumble rules make it somewhat more acceptable to risk your general in melee.

I'm looking at a couple different lord builds, including

Strigoi Ghoul king, curse of the revenant, dark majesty, fear incarnate, skabscrath, dragonbane gem. I'll run him with a bodyguard of wights with the screaming banner and his long lost wife, a banshee. The whole pile will preferably be deployed near a mortis engine, unless playing against one of those armies that can force miscasts. In game, they've got two screams a turn and the standard fear combo in a -1 leadership bubble, and the lord, while not a red fury combat monster, is no slouch in close combat himself. I'm currently converting my terrorghiest ghoul king to use as this guy, putting him in a slightly more regal, upright pose and giving him a flaming sword. I'll probably give him a crown, too. I like my Ghoul Kings to convey a regal self-image - part of why I like the wights as a bodyguard.

Lord, level 1, Zombie Dragon, talisman of preservation, nightshroud, heavy armor, shield, +1 strength sword, red fury, quickblood. Nothing fancy, and probably not even all that good, but the changes to the army crumble rules have me wanting to try out a dragon lord.

Other then that,

Vlad, with Isabella and a vamp bsb with fear incarnate and defensive items, in a unit of grave guard with shields, command, and the screaming banner, deployed 5 wide with Isabella in the second rank unless the unit is engaged with S3, single attack, non-horde enemy units.

Mannfred, on foot in a zombie bunker behind the front lines.

yeah, I like special characters. Wanna fight about it? :p

Personally, I'll be taking a combat lord only because it's now possible to be both good in combat AND a lvl 3/4 wizard. That was the only thing holding me back in the previous edition. If you took a combat-oriented build in anything but a dual-lord game, you were absolutely shafted from a magic standpoint. And that was completely unacceptable in the two-dice IoN spam era, where most of your Invocations would legitimately be dispelled if your wizard wasn't all that tooled out.

Also, characters can easily be killed with a single spell or cannonball.

+1 Sanai

Vamp Lord
Red Fury
Quickblood
Dread Knight
Ogre Blade (+2 S)
Enchanted Shield
Talisman of Preservation
Potion of Foolhardiness
Heavy Armor

Is WS 9 really necessary? Don't have the book yet, so i don't know how many points it costs. Also, i don't think there are many units that have WS >= than our lord's. Maybe those points spent on Dread knight could be used on something else? Perhaps increase fear/terror effect?

2 of my 3 regular opponents play Elf armies. WS9 means that WS4 will hit me on 5+. That's enough for it to be worth it in my personal gaming setting, but you could exchange it for Beguile if your opponents don't play those armies.

Plus, Chaos Lords will have a hard time against a WS9 opponent, hitting on 4+ instead of 3+. And there's a semi-regular at my club who brings a Chaos Lord all the time. It just makes sense for me to take Dread Knight.

It's a ghoul king build but as I didn't see a separate thread I'll post it here:

Ghoul King
+ Sword of Bloodshed
+ Red Fury
+ Potion of Strength
= 390pt

Cheap enough to fit into a 2.4k build with a lvl 4 Necromancer.

He's got 5+1+3 = 9 attacks with re-rolls to hit. The potion of strength makes him str 8 for one round (could be swapped for PoToughness) and has Red Fury.

Against a typical infantry model he can expect to kill ~13 per round. The strength 8 allows him to handle heavy armour or high toughness units (he could wipe ~10 Chaos/Empire Knights in a round). Obviously he's not overly well protected. ASF/GW units or Lords who can survive his onslaught may drag him down.

what do you people think of this one, hes going to go in a unit of 10 Black knights:
Vamp Lord with Skabscrath,
fear incarnate,
heavy armour
shield
on a barded nightmare.
=348pts

i play almost exclusively against empire so ive tried to talor this guy to slaughter units of swordsmen and halbeirders etc, let me know if u think ive got it right or not :vampire3:

This is my whole problem with our new book why oh why can we now make stupidly over powered unkillable f ing lords. I will not be building any of these as I dont agree with auto win characters. And before anyone says they can be killed I would like to know how when they are pushing out 5-8 attacks with re rolls ASF and red fury. Red fury and asf should be priced so you cant have both

pit of shades/mindrazor/comet spring to mind. Plus chaos lords can be built to be much much much more overpowered for around the same points cost. They have the same type of builds, the only thing is that except for nurgle they cant really regenerate like vampires can.

I think you need to sit back and relax for a bit. You seem to jump on every little thing and assume it's overpowered. How about you start putting a few lists together, and play a few games. Come back to us in a month or two and see what you have to say then.

Once you have purchased the uber lord and your 25 % in core, I think you'll quickly realise you can't take all the tricks and you won't have an answer for every situation.

Vampire Lord 564pts

Level 2 Magic (vampire), Heavy Armour, Nightshroud, Quickblood, Red Fury, Shield, Sword of Bloodshed, riding an AT.

8 re roll to hit attacks. Against most rank and file he should cut a huge bloody hole into anything. Plus the AT will do some damage as well. I plan on running him around with a pack of 6 deep vargiest (sp?). Too bad they can't officially be in one unit together.

He's a huge point sink, but I think he'll make those points back, or at the very least my model looks sexy.

Hmmm Abysmal Terror you say?

I'd be a wee bit nervous with no ward save. I would consider downgrading your sword to the +2A and grab opal amulet and potion of foolharidiness.

This is like the poor mans zombie dragon.

I'm not too worried about the ward save. Yes a cannon ball or two or 3 would turn him into pulp... but what's not to say that wouldn't happen with the save. With the flying about he should be able to pick a target that is squishy pretty quickly. If he takes a wound we have hunger and magic. I wouldn't fly him into the front of a unit unless it had under 15 models (we're talking infantry here)... and even then..., mostly he's going to smash into the sides and rear where there won't be supporting attacks.

Oh and he has a 2+ armor save which is plenty awesome for hack'n and slash'n rank and file.

I'd ram him into infantry unit of about 25-30, that should take him just abut 2 combat round to kill (if it not flees) and thus preventing your opponent from shooting at him.

Where do you get the +1 attack from? Some people think he's frenzied, but i cannot find that anywhere. Just poisoned attacks and hatred.

Pesky demons or Phoenix Guard got you down? Try:

Vamp Lord (as many magic levels as you want)
Red Fury
Quick Blood

Ogre Blade
Talisman Preservation
Other Tricksters Shard

Heavy Armor/Shield

Coven Throne

S7 attacks, re-roll misses, enemy re-rolls ward saves against entire Coven Throne. Yes, please! :devil2:

Is this right? You are not in base contact with yourself are you? The Shard shouldn't affect you of your mount.

I'm sure that the optimal build has already been decided upon by now, but I really want to make the Nightshroud work- as it fits wonderfully with the fluff of my von Carstein Vampire Lord. So, I drew up a build trying to get the most out of it, while still making him a pronounced Carstein.
Vampire Lord
HA+GW
Talisman of Preservation
Nightshroud
Red Fury
AoDM
Beguile
Dreadknight
Considering dropping the GW and Talisman of Preservation for a Sword of Battle and Talisman of 5++, but I don't think it would synergize well enough with the shroud.

I like the build except for Dreadknight. I just don't like that power. Too many missed opportunities to slice up another desirable model or unit because of a stupid chump challange.

Vampire Lord 390pts: magic lvl 1-4 depending on point restrictions
Sword of Strife
Armor of Destiny
Quickblood
Red Fury

i am a pretty new VC player and tried to come up with a cheap, decent lord. Tell me what you think :)

I have used these these three in my last three games, and he has been very effective in all of the games so far.

vs Nurgle Daemons, 1,500pts
Ghoul King
- red fury, quickblood, beguile
- ogre blade, ToTS, DBG

vs Dark Elves, 1,500pts
Ghoul King
- red fury, quickblood, beguile
- sword of bloodshed, ToTS, DBG

vs Ogres, 2,000pts
Ghoul King
- red fury, aura or dark majesty, beguile, dread knight
- ogre blade, glittering scales, DBG

In all three games he was sat in a unit of 40 Ghouls. Against the Nurgle Daemons he single handedly took out a Nurgle Marked Defiler, and then killed about 15 PB's which helped lead the unit to dissipate.

Against the Dark Elves he decimated a unit of Black Guard but didn't get a chance to do much else as we had to call the game short.

And against the Ogres he was a clear best on ground: he broke, and caught, a unit of 7 strong Ironguts with a BSB, after he charged out of a unit of Ghouls on his own. He caused 5 wounds (the BSB refused the challenge) but took none in return as he was impossible for them to hit with this combo of powers/items. He then turned around and charged his Ironblaster and took 4 wounds off of it (my Terrorgheist finished it off). My opponent conceded after that as his Slaughtermaster (plus 5 Lead Bleachers) broke and was caught in a separate combat.

One combo I am quite interested in using is:

Ghoul King
- red fury, aura of dark majesty, beguile
- fencers blades, glittering scales, DBG... And maybe a potion of strength.

He would be impossible to hit, all basic troops are hitting on 6's and you could have enemy characters hitting on 5's and potentially re-rolling.
