Legion of Nagash Unit idea ?

  • The masquerade of murder returns! A new game of Vampires Amongst Us has begun. Unmask the killers, trust no one, and try to survive the night. Find out more and sign up now!
I suggest:

1)Greater/Senior Necrophyte
2)Necrophyte Prime
3)Necrophyte Undergraduate

The emphasis here being that they are disciples and students, and not really full fledged mages.

I like Necrophyte Prime... though anything with Necrophyte in the name is fine by me (otherwise you have to re-word the chart to count the champion as well.. somehow).

hmm...

Necrophyte Magus?

Love it....

A quick idea for fluff on thrall magic?

Although not having mastered the black arts yet, necrophytes are still able to channel a moderate amount of dark magic. Unable to create or control thier own undead...yet, they help channel thier masters power through his unliving minions. In battle neophytes embolster and empower the link between the undead and thier master, working together to channel his dark reach into the outer edges of a battlefield. It is in this way that necrophytes first learn to control the undead.

the first thing i thought when i read necrophyte prime was transformers, i think its too close to that octupus nine bloke, or whatever his name is.

its also not a million miles away from space marine neophytes.

my last point is that necro and phyte are both greek based pre/suffixes respectively and it essentialy means death-plant, which would possibly be more at home in a wood elf army. maybe a fey-triffid

Neophyte also means a begginer or novice

Necrophyte, not being a real word, could easilly be necromancer novices :P

Etymology
From Middle English, from Late Latin neophytus, from Greek neophytos (newly planted), from phyein (to plant).

Your using literal translation, which is just a silly thing to do. if neophyte is acceptable for a begginer or novice (even considering it uses the phyte you described) then necrophyte is equally acceptable :P (try using babelfish to translate a page, it'll make all kinds of nonsense, translation takes some interpretation)

It is in no way an unreasonable word :P

Edit - also #
Necrophyte
A fungus (or other organism) colonising already dead tissues.

Edit - Quick edit, You could easilly translate it as Black Growth (using neophyte, new growth) as an example, and it could be a "proper" translation

i kinda like black growth for them personally

Necro Touched

Ok, can you show me on the doll where the naughty man touched you?

lol

I think Necrophytes is perfectly fine, i don't see any problem with it.

Ok, final version that will be put forward for voting tomorrow unless anyone has any objections:

Necrophytes

20 points per model (yes, even the Champion)

Necrophyte.................M 4 / WS 2 / BS 0 / S 3 / T 3 / W 1 / I 2 / A 1 / Ld 7
Necrophyte Prime.........M 4 / WS 3 / BS 0 / S 3 / T 3 / W 1 / I 2 / A 1 / Ld 8

Unit size: 1 Necrophyte Champion plus 4-9 Necrophytes

Unit restrictions: 0-1 unit per 2,000 points

Weapons: Hand Weapon

Armour: None

Special rules:
Skirmisher
Nagashi
Thrall magic
Shrouded

Thrall Magic
Although not having mastered the black arts yet, necrophytes are still able to channel a moderate amount of dark magic. Unable to create or control thier own undead...yet, they help channel thier masters power through his unliving minions. In battle neophytes embolster and empower the link between the undead and thier master, working together to channel his dark reach into the outer edges of a battlefield. It is in this way that necrophytes first learn to control the undead.
Roll on the following table at the start of every Legion turn:
1-5 Necrophytes still alive: 1D6+1
6-10 Necrophytes still alive: 2D6+2

The total is the range from the Necrophyte Champion in which any Undeads unit may march move for that turn only. Only units that are in this range at the start of the Legion turn may march as per the BRB.

In addition any Undead unit that is within this range and suffer from crumbling at any point until the start of the next Legion phase (check distance at the time when the crumbling would occur), they suffer one less wound than normal.

The benefits described in Thrall Magic are not usable while the Necrophytes are fleeing.

Shrouded
The Necrophytes of Nagash are not warriors, and only take to the battlefield to further their training in necromantic lore. As such they shroud themselves in the darkest of shadows and avoid the enemy at all cost
The Necrophytes may not willingly charge the enemy. Any enemy attempting to shoot or cast at the Necrophytes suffer -1 to hit or -1 casting roll. This is in addition to the normal -1 to hit for being skirmishers.

Edit - Just thought - what happens if the champ gets killed?

If the stat lines where the same another one could just step up to take his place.

Or rather then a champion you choose a model to be the 'focus point' at the start of everyturn.

The total is the range from the Necrophyte Champion in which any Undeads unit may march move for that turn only. *only removed* Units that are in this range at the start of the Legion turn may march as per the BRB.

It could have lead to some irritating picky people argueing with the rules.

Well we have an issue as the Prime does not have the same stat line, and the unit has to have a champion for their Thrall Magic power.

I would suggest that the Prime's statline matches the normal Necrophytes?

Eeeeeek! Why did my computer not inform me there were new posts here!
Damn.
Anyway, lets have a look-see... Necrophytes huh?

I like them. :D

But seen as I have finally found this thread, I shall contribute - if you give the Necrophyte the same stat line as the Prime, whats to stop unscrupulous players abusing this and saying - 'well they all have the same stats, so il just remove a basic necrophyte'. thus making the Prime virtually unkillable. there needs to be something to make him stand out.

Hmm... what if we didn't include the Prime, but instead you have to "choose 1 model each turn to act as the focus"?

I think that would work the best, as we don't have to mess around with champions with the same stats and people becoming champions in the middle of games.

So how is this version:

Before using this power you must select one model to be the "Locus" for that turn. The Locus can change from turn to turn.
