Based on this, it appears that AoS is indeed the new game. Existing armies and models will receive new rules for use in the new game, which is good news because we can all continue playing with our toys.

BUT: The FULL RULES for Warhammer: AoS are only 4 pages? That doesn't sound terribly complex. So, either the depth and variation of the game will be lost, or the special rules and options that make every unit unique will be in their own unit entry. And that smacks of other games like Warmachine and Malifaux that have stat cards on the table. If they turn this into a glorified combo generator, deck builder card game with models, then it's 8th forever for me.

Yes I do like the name Stormcast Eternals, it has a nice ring to it. If the rules are concise enough then it might be good, but I don't think i'll be able to live without ranked up blocks of infantry / cavalry. I really hope there isn't any stupid magic like in 8th, or stupid rules like steadfast. Time will tell.

I'm really hoping that the rules/stats for existing armies will come down this weekend and not at some later undisclosed date. More than anything I want to know more about the new rules and how they will affect my vampire army.

Even warmachine still has a pretty long rulebook. Perhaps the 4 page rule is just a stripped down intro set, akin to what comes in warmachine starter boxes, and an 'advanced rulebook' will come later.

Or perhaps this entire retailer announcement is a hoax. We've seen hoaxes more complicated and more convincing then this before other major GW releases in the past. One commenter on BoLS pointed out that GW generally never refers to itself as 'GW' instead of 'Games Workshop', nor does the talk of 'support' sound like them, since from their official perspective there's no such thing as ongoing support, their releases are physical and once purchased exist forever without any relation to later releases or lack there of.

So yeah, this could be just a fake, mocked up based on the recent image leaks plus other recent rumors. I don't think there's any info in there that hasn't appeared in some rumor previously, several from rather dubious sources, including sources that got the starter box contents entirely wrong.

So it's best not to get worked up one way or another, we'll know in a week.

They'll probably have the PDF of the rules up on the GW site when the game goes up for pre-order on the 4th.

Hopefully the rules for the existing armies as well so we can all freak out in proper fashion. :D

So, just got off the phone with my GW rep. They are really going big on this one. I've been offered quite a few nice incentives to support the launch, and will be receiving free copies of the box, demo armies, credit on old product, posters, prizes, etc. Thursday I'll receive a full copy of the rules with i will take home and eat with ketchup and spend a day digesting. Nice incentives across the board for retailers that take a bunch of them, support the launch, (and are currently paying their bills, of course.)

Info I was told:

-It's not 9th edition WFB, its a totally different game. There is no 9th edition coming. There is no huge rule book coming. Age of Sigmar is the main product.

-Most of the leaks on the internet are wrong. I'll be able to confirm this Thursday. In particular the bit about different formations is incorrect.

-The 96 page book is a hobby book, painting, history, how to play examples etc. The 4 pages of rules is indeed the rules. Laminated.

-Each unit in the game has a War Scroll that has the rules specific to that unit. So rules for each artillery piece will be on that unit's scroll, each monster will have a scroll, etc.

-The 4 pages of rules and all War Scrolls will be free and online July 4th at midnight. This will be a living document.

lets say that again, since some of the words like "free" may seem surprising to some folks

-Cost is 125.00 in the US

-There may be additional books in the near future, hobbyist/collectors items. Not at all needed for the game, and may not even have the rules in the them. Age of Sigmar: The Big Book of pictures and how to paint....etc. There is no HC big rulebook like we had in WFB, no 3 rule books in a slipcover like in 40k. Just the Age of Sigmar box. And the rules for that box are online and free along with rules for all the old models in your army.

-Supposedly doesn't matter how things are based.

-Scales well from skirmish to large battles. Leave your models ranked and on bases if you like.

Looking forward to reading it all on Thursday.

From DakkaDakka, Mikhail is a retailer at a GW store who had a meeting with GW to inform him of what is going on. I love the idea of all the rules being free, and with everything going up Saturday, I am looking forward to seeing how Vampire counts and Tomb Kings fare under the new rules.

Good news: its NOT ninth.

bad news: the rumour about loose tight and square formations is wrong. that was the best rumour :-(

Wow... I wonder what the GW bashers will complain about now? :)

Oh they are complaining about how stupid GW is for releasing free rules, completely ignoring the fact that up until now they have complained about the cost of the rules, that and that It is impossible for GW to have a rule set in 4 pages so it must be utter crap.

1 page for each phase? (Move-Magic-Shoot-Combat)

If anyone can actually reduce all Warhammer rules to 4 pages (hell... even to Legal-sized sheets) while being clear and ample...

...I will have him teach my (future) sons how to make a proper synopsis =P

Well, we are only 5 days away, so... fingers crossed!

Please note: No more army books!! ALL rules FREE!!!! Blimey, someone has had a knock to the head at Lenton!!

This was an email sent out to stores!

With the latest batch of rumours, I am beginning to feel cautiously optimistic, and being Scottish, that can be a bad thing, especially with our track record in Rugby and Football in recent years

Shooting explains ballistic skill and modifiers plus a table for to hit rolls, close combat explains we, with table and his to wounds with table and then explains saves, hero phase sounds like magic plus done, and I bet the final phase is break checks. It's do able, but will be challenging, some one has started it is for pages with a ton of text, a wall to be more exact

Well poo... Unfortunately I don't play WHF I play 40k. Wanted to get into WHF because of the movement tray blocks, would be a fun change from my 40k. However, if its all loose like 40k I see no point in playing WHF, not complaining, just will stick with 40k rather than two different systems that basically play the same

This is definitely a "beginners" game. There's no way that veteran players are going to enjoy this simple game. Victory being solely decided by models lost? Mortal wounds getting no saves? Flyers having to have a 3 inch buffer at all times or it can't move? This is basically 40k with fantasy models...

And in the meantime on the polish version of ebay people started posting sigmarines and new chaos dudes for sale, illustrating them with the blurry photos from the net. Business sharks at their finest it seems xD

As for the rules, I will still have to read them more intently. Adding rules to single units independently of army books is awesome in my opinion. No more waiting for one big overhaul once every few (few-teen?) years.

Wow... I wonder what the GW bashers will complain about now? :)

That's easy Sunny. They nuked Warhammer Fantasy Battles. I kinda feel like a favorite dog just died. :'( My friends and I will keep playing Warhammer Fantasy Battles but I suspect as the tournaments die a slow death so too will the hobby. Yes there are still people playing Blood Bowl (which isn't supported anymore) but this is a far cry different. Blood Bowl is like Space Hulk. A self contained game in a box. Warhammer Fantasy Battles is just completely on another level.

BTW, I have loved my time on this Forum. You guys are the best. I suppose as nothing new will be coming out for Warhammer Fantasy Battles I won't likely have much to post about Vampire Counts or even my other armies. So I will miss you all. Game on!

Interesting... so you can only use two dice for casting and dispelling... wonder what Nagash's new battlescroll rules will look like then...

Agreed definitely entry level. Hopefully though it might inspire newbies, once they've got the hang of it, to try out Oldhammer 8th Ed etc.

I'm still hoping for a shiny new undead faction tbh... I guess we'll see on saturday when all the warscrolls go up online what units there are.

We don't have any real confirmation, or anything suggesting that there won't be a 9th ed at some point right? It's just that they launched a skirmish game set in post end times, that also uses old models?

As for the rules I am disappointed so far.. No formations at all! And every model in the unit gets to attack!

Retailers are getting emails/ speaking with their GW sales reps that confirm AoS is THE rules set. There is no 9th edition on the way.

In defense of the 3" buffer for fliers: the whole 3" thing is clearly meant to replace the concept of being locked in combat (you can't move within 3" of an enemy model except by charging, if you're already within 3" of an enemy you can't move except by falling back), and a flier previously locked in combat couldn't just move away at will, either.

In general, though, yeah, this is a bit tooo streamlined for my tastes. Unless the individual models just come with a ton of special rules, or we see an 'advanced' version of these rules later, I'm not sure how much game play I'll actually be able to get out of this game.

Again, I'll certainly try it out, free is free after all, but... *shrug*.

Also, I see nothing about points costs here. Just 'take what units you like'. If it is entirely up to the players involved to balance the sides, if there is nothing in the game to say how many sigmarite warriors is fair to field per nagash model fielded by your opponent, then this isn't even a game, simple or otherwise, it's just waving models around and saying 'pew pew'.
