That's the most horrible thing one can experience in any hobby, as i's also happening all over the world in all communities. Are there so few people for whom WH is a hobby? It has the best miniatures possible (and GW couldn't be closer to making such awesome and dynamic berzerkers ever) and it's still so. Rules were always not that good, 8 editions long. Nobody understood it yet? Play your games as you should, but as long as it's hobby for you and not just points (in which case you should take another hobby in my book), you will carry on like it must be - with your standards high and spears and shields ready. GW is not that stupid to kill its best and most brilliant world even if they try to shake it sometimes.

I'll never understand why so many are / were fond of 8th edition. I always thought it was crap.

Warhammer is a very niche hobby however. It is not mainstream at all, and it will never have a massive following like video games because it requires a lot of effort on the part of those who engage in it (modelling, painting, carrying the minis around in cases, reading huge rule books etc.) and the content of it is "nerdy" because it's fantasy, and it's expensive.

So while someone may love to play 6th or 7th edition, the truth is that sometimes people don't have a group that they can play those editions with because the groups in their area want to play the current editions, other games entirely, or a different edition than that which they prefer. Some people end up still loving miniature wargaming but being relatively isolated, or they have friends who don't like Warhammer.

One of the most disappointing things about this for me is that my local store doesnt want us playing games of 8th edition in store.

I mean ive already decided to play kings of war, but it sucks for the others.

Looking through this thread and across a number of forums all I can see in the shattering of a gaming community. Without the certainty of 8th the community has fractured into people playing separate editions of fantasy, kings of war, AoS or straight up moving away from GW. On the bright side we can still unite as collectors around the miniature range no matter the system but still...
I'm holding out hope for the other rumoured Ages but until then :(

I can see all but exclusively posting in The Dark Art for a good long spell. The paint desk is populated, even if the gaming table isn't.

The fact that I happen to have 50 blood knights is just a product of that, and I think I have the right to be happy that I can actually use them all now, together, in a game, and put some nicely painted models on the table and have fun.

Assuming you can find an opponent now....

We always had the option of putting our models on the table and playing soldiers with them. When I was little we use to set up our army men in brick and stone forts and throw dirt clods at them. Hit ourselves with the dirt clods as often as we hit the soldiers. But then...well hell, we grew up.:innocent:

I just played a game today. I have lots of positive things to say and was honestly impressed by the complexity of tactics. A bunch of our die hard 8th players and some 40k players were there. Everyone was surprised at the game's depth. Everyone in this thread needs to go play a game or two before they judge it any further. The game has a lot to offer warhammer players. I love 8th and Age of Sigmar had tons of tactics in it and when I was done, there was things I wanted from Age of Sigmar in 8th.

Believe me or not, but I think Age of Sigmar is deeper in gameplay and tactics than 8th was. Serious. I will write up more later when I have time. There is hope my fellow brothers in blood.

Actually Yorga compared to Ogres and a lot of other things, Blood Knights aren't OP.

Wasn't my point at all. I wish you luck in finding opponents to play AoS and your 50 Blood Knights with. I can tell you that here...AoS is D.O.A. My community is just not into silly. When they feel like being silly (and drunk too) they play something like Munchkin.

Nice inexpensive board game made for laughs.

Can you go into some depth please? I'm interested to read your insight.

Well, I too went up to the Hobby store in hopes of some games today, and I fished out two. There were seriously only like 5 people at the store today (Very much due to the holidays), but I ended up playing a game of Ogres vs Dwarves, then Ogres vs Undead.

I ended up writing a battle report, and decided it best to separate it into a different thread. Feel free to read it, or join in with your opinions if you have tried AoS by now over here.

In any case, as a quick TL: DR, I begrudgingly think the game has potential. It's not yours, or my, Warhammer Fantasy Battles, but then again we use to use actual cards and have winds of magic determine our spells each turn. No one cried when that changed, or the other myriad of changes that have happened over the years (Actually people have cried, constantly in truth). But the point is, in the end of the day you can't change what is happening. A Boycott is probably not going to happen, because this is honestly going to draw in more business than it shuts out, and the existing player base isn't keeping the game in a fanatical state of renewal like 40k which apparently still draws is plenty and keeps people interested/spending. In fact, if you read my report, that player who fielded dwarves against me looked at the Warscroll for two units and bought them today, because he was interested. So I doubt it's going to simply flop like a lot of the die-hard tactica-fans would like.

violent lunatic, and his temper does little
to help his stretched sanity. If, during
your hero phase, you talk to Konrad von
Carstein, you can re-roll all hit rolls of
1 for him until your next hero phase. If
Konrad von Carstein talks back to you,
re-roll all failed hit rolls instead.

Hand of Dust
It is said that the touch of Nagash can
wither and age any mortal, turning them
to little more than a pile of dusty bones
in mere moments. Hand of Dust has a
casting value of 8. If successfully cast, pick
an enemy model within 3". Then, take a
dice and hide it in one of your hands. Hold
your hands in front of your opponent and
ask them to pick one. If they pick the one
holding the dice, their model dodges the
attack. If not, the model is turned to dust
and is slain!

Wight King, Save 4+
Ancient Shield: A Wight King with an
Ancient Shield has a Save of 3+.

Where is the tactis, where is the depth, where is the logic, where is the competivty, where is my mind ...STOP!

edit, actually i am going to take on all the magnificent new rules and see how many have sense and how many does not.

Actually they don't sound that bad they are actually alright rules that just have a little humour added in so its not so serious what's wrong with that????

Nagash: it is a spell you are required to cast, IF you cast it successfully you have a 50/50 chance of instant killing a model provided your opponent doesn't pick the right hand it would be the exact same thing if it was a d6 roll it's slightly op but only if you cast it successfully and get lucky

Konrad: pretty much it just means you will always re-roll to wound it is just a ability he has which GW has decided to add some humour into it so what

Wight King: they choose what they wield either a shield or a standard it's not that damn hard to understand seriously read the rules, if you choose the standard your save is the 4+ otherwise you pick a shield which makes it 3+ it's the exact same with a skeletal steed YOU CHOOSE WHAT IT HAS how is that not tactical, having depth and logic. Read most unit descriptions they have options you can arm certain units with eg shields great weapons etc it's the same as before but without any cost

which bring me back to the question, where is the tactics, where is the depth, where is the balance, where is the logic.
But again and again, is useless talk about sense and logic, for some people faith is a personal journey, for others is Jesus on a grilled cheese toast.

Hello blood-suckers!
I haven't kept up on this post but thought I'd pop in.
Me and my mate played 3 games of AoS yesterday afternoon (yes 3 games in an afternoon!)
First game my Vlad and 20 zombies against his tomb king on chariot and 20 archers.
Second game my CT, bloods, 20 z, 3 vargs against his Nagash, usabti, 20 archers,
Third game 20 z, 20 GG, Vlad, Konnrad, 3 vargs, against wood elf Lord on stag, treeman, Orion 12 archers.
System was fun. All our units now seem playable or at least have fun elements to them. Couldn't see a unit u wouldn't want to field now. It's really fast and a great laugh.
But seems like they missed a trick by not having alternate unit moves instead of each player having a whole turn. And balancing forces is a nightmare. Without knowing all the unitswell and abilities really well u can't seem to get a completely even match (yet). Hope they fix that that. Nagash is hideous. But he's what he should be fluff wise. My mate felt guilty after the game with him and probably wouldn't field him again unless in a massive game. if they give us a way to balance matches it will be a brilliant game imo.

I think we've got to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bathwater... GW have undeniably burned a lot of people by first massively upselling then deleting 8th Edition, but that won't be fixed by shunning Ao$ out of hand. Worst case we've got no support for 8th but we do have a completely free pissabout game that sounds really fun and easy to try when we don't have time for a game of Warhammer. I'll give it a go, although I promise nothing!

The only thing i actually like is the rule for weak units getting stronger in larger units to make them viable. But nope, im out. If i want to play a supported game ill stick to kings of war, which is in some ways better than whfb in fact (faster, more streamlined, better flank/rear attack benefits, non overpowered magic, though it is less customizable with set unit numbers etc), otherwise old hammer is the only gw game ill touch.

All I see is whining... If you don't like it, don't play it, it's as simple as that. No one is forcing you to play AoS, you are quite welcome to play WHFB if you have a group also willing to do so.

What you see as whining others see as discussing the hobby they have ploughed hundreds of pounds, probably thousands in to.

If it were hobby for them, they wouldn't be whining about changing systems and the like. It's your choice always, and the new minis are great even though they have round bases, but still, you field all your collection anyway, just according to the new rules. What's wrong with that?

If it were a hobby they wouldn't be whining, that makes zero sense.

In don't like the new rules, what's wrong with that?

Looking forward to Najo's write up.

I don't know why you'd want to take a White King with shield, the banner is far too awesome.

Maybe you bought those models for the wrong reasons. If you bought them to "compete" and "win" instead of for the enjoyment of modelling, painting and converting them, then having a game or two every now and then, then maybe you entered the hobby for the wrong reasons too.

Powergaming is a disease, I think. the Win at All Costs mentality is clearly unsupported by GW, and I agree with them - the obsession with being competitive in a tabletop game is ridiculous, and I always hated the tournament mindset and the obsession with bending the rules. So while you may feel rejected by GW, I actually really like their change in approach.

Nothing except that you and some others change games instead of changing yourselves according to the changes in the hobby.

Maybe because many people have that great plastic Wight King on foot? He has a shield and why not?
