Now for a quick painting blitz.

I'm going stir crazy from limiting myself from being able to touch my Warriors of Chaos until May 1st. So.. seeing that I have the day off, I'm presenting myself a challenge...

Just how fast can I paint this? It's for a friend's bugger High Elf army, which I hate by the way, and I told him I'd paint it for him. Seeing that I have plans to see the miss tonight, seven hours until then, I'm challenging myself to get this done before then.

Let's go on a sprint shall we?

The first step is already done as I have used my airbrush to full affect. Let's do this!

Alright, time for lunch. Here's a quick update while I eat my grilled cheese sandwich!!

I've gotten the stuff done that is considered the most time consuming - the blending. This is an exercise in precision and speed so while I could spend all day on this cloak, I'm putting a limit on myself. This is actually a good thing to practice.

About five hours to go. Here's a picture of my workspace by the way:

Oh and some tips:
Have some music going while you go at this. It makes it more fun and you get into a methodical trance. Not to mention my place sounds like a damn dance club now...

Clean your brush often and change the water often as well.

Also, no caffeine, but keep hydrated! No joking here. We use very minute movements when we paint, especially when it comes to acute pieces of the mini. The more hydrated you are, the better your body is at steadying itself. You shouldn't have caffeine because it increases your heartrate which makes your coordination a nightmare. (Trust me, I have ruined many sets of eyes doing this.)

I know what you mean though...right after coffee I have to steer clear of eyeballs for a little while.

Thanks for the encouragement, but it seems that I have failed. And so close too!!

Actually, my dinner/date reservations with the miss got moved up so I have to conceed to that factor. But here he is so far!

I'll just knock the rest of him out tomorrow.

What kind of paint/glaze/dilution mixture are you using?

He is beautiful! loving the paint job you have done! I was wondering though, it seems you do an entire section at a time, for example the entire face including shading and detail etc, I was wondering why you think that method is better then painting all the base coats first then the details? Because I can never decide which way to paint my models. and Do you paint your units in the same way or do you do all the base coats first then work your way up to details?

Also Amazing and subtle blending on the cloak with a gorgeous colour! :O

What kind of paint/glaze/dilution mixture are you using?

I use a different way of painting than most that goes really well with the airbrush work I do first. I used the GW washes primarily as my medium when I paint. Mix only a tiny bit of water then I use actual paint, either Vallejo Model Air colors since they're so liquidy or P3 paints. The mixture is as follows:

70 % GW wash, 15% paint, 15% water. You'll have a very dilute mixture, but it blends so well.

Thanks, my dear! He's not done yet but hopefully tonight. Certainly wouldn't want to cancel date night with the miss or there'll be hell to pay.

In regards to the sections, it depends on what I'm painting. For display pieces like the griff, I like to do section at a time, but I keep it fast. For footsloggers, I tend to basecoat all the pieces first and then work on them. However, lately as I've been using different mixes to paint with, I do focus more on a part at a time as I can perfect the current mix I'm using between highlights and shading.

It's about limiting how long you spend on each part of the mini, something that I struggle with. I'm working on being much faster!

I use it to make translucent inks opaque...I've liked the results.Is that metallic gold diluted in the same fasion? Do you paint metallics over white? or black out the area?

My metallics are a different breed of beast. I do tend to paint them over white or any other lightshade I end up with as the last step of using the airbrush.

For metallics I use Vallejo Model Air metallics. They're actually ment for the airbrush but boy do they go on smooth. Excellent metal to medium qualities and they are very easy to work with. I like to mix a bit of snakebite leather with my golds, some blues with my steel and some browns with my dirtier metals. I find that adding a bit of an opaque paint with them cuts a bit of shine out of them, but also adds a bit of depth to them.

Also, try mixing some inks or washes with your metals - you'd be a bit intrigued with the results.

I have never used a white ink before, sounds interesting!

Haha, thanks guys. I've told myself I'm going to be finishing this Griff before I start on my army. As much as it kills me, I better finish my friend's mini before I get sucked into my army.

Hopefully I'll finish and knock this guy out completely today. Damn social life for getting in the way.

Beautiful elf Jake. Nice work just as usual.

Personally I'd have liked the cloak to stay clean, he's a high elf after all, but that's really just personal preference. I love the blending especially since I have a lot of blues to do right now myself - might give me some new ideas. You did use Ultramarines Blue (or an equivalent of another fabricate) am I right? Because my cloaks based on Regal Blue and Enchanted Blue look slightly different.

Great advice on the metals though. Up until now I used a Bright base colour and painted pure gold /metal over it (depending on the basecolour - snakebite leather for gold, blue-ish grey for steel) and then highlighted / washed the thing. But mixing the colours with the metal right away seems like a nice thing to try. Thanks for the inspiration.

I'm very curious about your 2250pts challenge. Unfortunately I was not able to sign up because I can't reliably tell when I get to paint and when I can't (my plog hasn't received much love in the past months sadly - that's gonna change).

Thanks for the feedback guys. I actually did paint the gryphon rider's cape back to complete blue rather than dirty it up a bit. But I'm taking a break from that stupid model for a bit and beginning work on my own army for a change.

Here's my update. Yes, yes there would be more but I had one hell of a migraine this week and painting with your head throbbing is certainly something I don't advise...

As you can see, I'm just doing the armor so far. I want my army to have a dirty feel to them. With bold lines and details, I don't want them to look like they just came out of an armory. I want them to have some grizzle to them.

Very nicely done.
It will probably look awesome when finished. I have once doubted to chose chaos warriors (but evantually chose beasts) so I will keep an eye on this threads. The level of painting is ofcourse also a reason why I keep an eye on this thread.

Very impressive Redarmy The airbrushing really works, and like others have said I wouldn't mind learning how to do it myself, anything to speed things up Any chance you could do a youtube video?
