Great work as usual, I'd prefer to see grave guards instead of wraiths. There is an axe in the GG kit wich would set them apart from the rnf models. The problem with GG is that they're in the middle of a step forward and this model would look best with stationary guards imo. But I dont see you having any problem with working something out there ;)

I dig the Casket. I'm really enjoying seeing the ways we're all VC'ing up a TK unit. I think the Wraiths work great. And naturally, I'm a fan of any use of the Necrarch models. Team Necrarch!

@Adam_Barrow: Glad you liked it. Sure have been some really creative conversion created in light of the End Times. Guess that no matter how you look at it that part was a success.

@ObliviJohn: Thanks :)
But don't you dare tempt me, this was supposed to be a quick project so from the start I wanted to use existing models from my army for the guards. While GGs might look better if converted properly it is simply too much work for this thing, and I'm pretty much out of time, as you know ;)

Will try to take some pics of it different guards soon so that you can all give a fair judgement.

An update on this week's progress in the restarted zombie workshop. Please give these new guys a warm welcome and make them feel right at home.

I've decided that I want a total of 210 zombies, since that can be divided into 3 units of 70 or into one massive unit 30 wide and 7 deep. With my current number of 187 painted and 5 assembled but unpainted from before that meant another 18 to assemble when I restarted this project. With the 6 above (almost finished but needs GS in a shoulder joint) I'm down to 12 more. Since I'm running out of parts to build with I'm gonna go a few more cheaper solutions like the gravestones and rubble above. Still have a few cool ideas for the remaining proper zombies though so it won't be completely uninteresting.

C&C much appreciated :)

haha awesome zombies and for the casket i never thought to use my old necarch vamp for something like that and I think was that the chalice from the Coven throne???? Awesome idea~!

Thanks for the comments!

@Hutobega: Yeah, was really happy when I realised how good he would fit there. The chalice thing in the middle is from the Screaming Bell kit.

@Farmer7574: :| You mean I help GW with marketing... xD

@Theerteen: Glad you liked them. Gonna try and snap some pictures of the casket with different guards as I promised earlier.

I have no words to describe your army, came into the office to do some extra work on a Sunday and have spent the last hour scrolling through all 18 pages. Spectacular work, it's seeing things like this that drive me to continue improving and not just settle with my current standards. Also think you've helped solve my wight blade painting problem. Although I'll use blue to counteract my red cloaks.

Can't wait to see more and maybe a monster of two ;-)

@Mad 'At Ok so I've finally gotten around to thoroughly looking through your whole plog instead of just browsing random parts of it (c'mon, it's massive!)

A picture is worth a thousand words and you have a shed load of pictures here (all worth that much), so I thought I'd share my opinions and ask a few questions about your VC army.

So from oldest to most recent, your countess is awesome, scary and seductive (I'd like to see you do a mounted version of her)

I started some VC a few years back and chose dark blue as the colour scheme to break the standard red most people like to use, and you've pulled it off really well. Especially incorporating the orange rust effect which contrasts the blue beautifully.

Your banners turned out really well, awesome design work and nicely painted too (what a shame about your spelling mistake, probably one of the worst times to make one!)

Ghouls are great. I've recently picked up 4 boxes and am considering some comical unit fillers. Yours give a lot of inspiration, I love the ghoul dangling from the half-eaten body! That zombie prey in the ghoul crowd is hilarious too, it's like a horror movie for zombies (however the zombie still seems to be cheerful and smiling, excellent!)

I'm pretty sure you've gone and made GW jealous with your spirit hosts, they're truly creative and the bodiless hooded entities idea works perfectly.

Your dreg looks so funny, it's like an overweight Igor who's just had sex. The vampire thrall girl is really cool too, she looks so fragile yet creepy and menacing at the same time. Looks a bit like that girl out of the movie 'Ring'.

The grave guard blades have been pulled off beautifully and look like fantasy force weapons. The vampire in the coffin being carried by these guys is cool too, I like the skin tone you've used and it has made me realize I'd prefer a greyish tone when I get to doing mine in the summer time. This GG unit is definitely worthy of the awards you've won for it. Top man!

Your Mr. Happyface is pretty funny and cool, it reminds me of the killer in 'Scream', but cartoonized. The Vampire lord with the mace looks awesome too. I like how your army doesn't look like it's real life but something out of a video game which enjoys a more vivid pallette, excellent use of colours throughout.

Great job on your necromancers too, I especially like the guy raising the dead under his feet (consider this idea stolen). By the way that zombie's eyes looks as blood shot as a stoner's!

Your zombies definitely steal the glory in your army, it's great how you've taken a 'canon-fodder' unit which offers so much potential for diversity (which a lot of people don't use to it's full extent, including myself) and totally gone to the limits to create a giant shambling horde of corpses from a variety of the Warhammer armies. (I wish my bitz box was that expansive!).

The reposing of the vargheists' wings has paid off perfectly, they look totally menacing and predatory. I might have to pick your brains on how you did that. I have that same banshee which you have too which I ended up layering from blue up to white, but the colours you've gone for a sweet.

Your BSB's banner; nice work as with the others. The face of your countess on the standard looks very striking. I also love your version of the casket of souls, I think that's one of the best ideas I've seen yet. (I might have to 'borrow' this idea too if I ever get my hands on the smoking brazier part).

That said; here are a few questions if you don't mind answering them:

-What parts did you use to make your bodiless spirit hosts?
-Where's the male vampire lord's mace from?
-How did you achieve the paintjob on the Vargheists' wings' membranes?

All in all, top work and astounding creativity. Keep your undead coming!

-F

@Zacharias: I am touched by your words and am very glad to have inspired you, albeit at the cost of your work time ;)
The swords were pretty challenging to do, but I do encourage you to try it. I'll PM you the tutorial I used as basis for them, it's a WD scan so I can't post it openly. Should suit you perfectly as it is in fact for blue swords, I adjusted it for a orange scheme.

Best of luck! :)

@Farmer7574: Thank you for such thorough praise. I greatly appreciate that you took the time to write all that. You are more than welcome to take any inspiration you want from my army. Onto your questions:

-What parts did you use to make your bodiless spirit hosts? - They are made from Wood Elf Glade Guard bodies, with all the flesh part removed. The cloaks are what makes the whole thing possible. Their weapons come from an array of kits, Wood Elves, Skeletons, Empire, Men-at-arms and even Black Orcs.
-Where's the male vampire lord's mace from? - The Empire General kit.
-How did you achieve the paintjob on the Vargheists' wings' membranes? - They are painted using a feathering technique, where paint is thinned down and painted in very thin layers repeatedly. Each layer moving further and further towards the fade. For paints I started with an even coverage of Steel Legion Drab. Then I faded up to Vomit Brown near the arms. The ends were faded with Rhinox Hide followed by Chaos black. For each fading step several sub steps were used where the paints where mixed. After the fading I highlighted and shaded all the folds and cracks in the membranes using colours from fades higher up.

Your Casket of souls is very good looking and I think that's a very clever conversion also, quite "simple", but it's working. Great stuff.

@johnjohn2: Glad to hear that :)

@Farmer7574: No problem. The vargheist skin is a basecoat of Astronomican Grey mixed with Rakarth Flesh, but I'm guessing something like Pallid Wych Flesh could work quite well. Next is a wash of purple followed by a shading with Nuln Oil in the deepest recesses. Next I drybrushed with the basecoat colour. After that I used the same colour again to highlight, using the drybrush a a sort of guide. Finally I did the same with a white drybrush and highlight. The last thing was to freehand a lot of veins in their skin, done with thin lines of Enchanted Blue.

Slow progress in the zombie workshop, but progress non the less. Got another 9 worth of zombies assembled since last update. Check them out bellow:

Some cheaper than others, but the halfling am I really pleased with and the knight guy will be very fun to paint. The bright white guy is an old empire flagellant with a new head, really hard to make out any details of him in the photo though. In the background you can also make out a small statue on a little stone pillar, made from a wood elf spite and some styrofoam, all covered in liquid green stuff.

I have also managed to do some painting on the three minis I'm painting up as gifts. There will hopefully be an update on them in the appropriate plog during the coming week.

That's all for now :)

@Shadespyre: Thanks :)
Don't know if it's good or bad that the price of making them fun to do is that it takes forever to get them done. Guess it does keep me happy for a longer time :P But in either case, there are not many to go now and that feels really good.

@Adam_Barrow: Very glad you liked him. I used the torso from a 5th edition skeleton, can't believe I didn't think of doing it sooner. I've used goblin legs before to make zombies but was bothered that there were no torsos of appropriate size, and I've used 5th skeleton torsos before and been bothered by their small size. But not until recently I added 1+1 and combined them. Also picked one of the tiniest shields I could find, from the state troops box. Had thoughts about using a bretonnia men-at-arms shield first, hiding the whole dude behind it, but it looked a bit too silly.

The best zombies on the 'net, part next! I love them, as always. Two guys shoot with a single arrow, the halfling, the knight guy, they are all delightful ;) I really need to try making some guys like these the next time I will do zombies. I don't expect to get them as wonderfully colorful and characterful and yours, but I will try  Also, your bit-box must be IMMENSE ;)

@Mad 'At Nice zombies as always! Not one single zed in your army that is the same as another, great variety and conversions.

That big wood elves moth thing looks cool, I've been thinking of some stuff like that for my on-the-list Forest goblins.

I'll be starting on zombies in the near future and will definitely be using your blog for inspiration.

Keep up the good work.
