The Undead Legion of Countess Ludmila von Karnstein

  • The masquerade of murder returns! A new game of Vampires Amongst Us has begun. Unmask the killers, trust no one, and try to survive the night. Find out more and sign up now!
@Adam_Barrow: Thanks, and I'm glad you caught that reference xD

@Leithel: Thank you.

The Trusty Companions are based on the original Morheim Dregs from the Von Carstein Warband. The Dregs were human servants to the Vampire. I use them as Blood Slaves, which is basically the same thing for Lahmia, only in Henchmen form. I've given them right arms from the Empire Militia plastic kit (magnetized so I can give them other weapons in the future).

The Skulking Shadows have legs and torsos from the Zombies and Empire Milita plastic kits, arms from Empire Milita (with some hand swaps to create the pose pulling back the bowstring). Heads from Bretonnian archers, quivers from High Elf archers and 6th edition Night Goblins.

Glad you liked the faces. Sadly the pictures don't really do them justice. Will probably take some close ups once the crew is complete.

@Farmer7574: Thanks. Yeah, the old sculpts really were quite comical, but charming :)

And the Black Coach is finished!

I must say that I am not entirely happy with the outcome, mainly cause it feels a bit too simplistic. But considering how fast this project was by my standards (assembled and painted in less than 3 weeks) I guess I can't complain too much, and besides, this is one of few models I have with such a limited palette, so I'm happy about that. It was a lovely model to work with, and I'm very glad to have added it to my army. On that note I shall also offer my thanks to @Melle who gave the model to me as part of out zombie exchange deal. I didn't think much of it at the time, party because I didn't find it's rules that inspiring back and 8th. And not to toot my own horn, but I do find it quite awesome in 9th Age, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it on the field.

Anyway, onto the pictures:

And when I say limited colour palette, I mean until you open the lid of the coffin xD

Inspired by @Mioum's awesome Coach, I added padding to the inside of the wagon. I think it really adds a lot to the model.

And quite crappy close up shots of the vampire. Realise now that I should have stood the coffin up when taking the pictures rather than tilting the camera to face the ground.

And as a special final treat, I have a small update on the Mordheim Warband. Nothing painted this time, but I've more or less finished the sculpting on Yusuf Zaahir Abd al-Hamid, the Blood Servant. A proud youngling of the Qassari tribes. Ensnared by the Lamia Vampires Hashepsut and Ast, he fights willingly in the streets of Mordheim, despite his lack of skill at handling a weapon. He is know as "Pretty Boy" by the envious henchmen of the group, for only the Equitaine Knight, Sir Gaël Dubois, stands closer to the Mistress of the Warband.

His arms are magnetised so that I could change his gear in the future.

That is all for now, feel free to comment =)

Going backwards through this is great, there are some real treasures in here. I particularly love the casket of souls and the colourful banshee. With regards to the mordheim gang have you been looking at frostgrave at all?

@Mioum: Have to say that I think it works better with the vampire you choose to have residing inside the coach, but I am quite happy with the result regardless.

@Nikos: Thanks, glad you liked it. @ObliviJohn was talking a little to me about Frostgrave in the chat some days ago. Sounds interesting enough, though I'm not really looking for other games atm. Between 9th Age and Mordheim (9th Heim rather) I am pretty swamped. Why do you ask?

I also have a small update for ya, on what I've been working on this weekend. Below is Ast, the Blood Sister of my Warband.

And again, through the wonders of magnets I've made it possible to change her gear. As I know I will want to arm her with a Serpent Whip eventually, I've already prepared this alternative right hand:

Now I just have to fix a head for her xD

I haven't given it a go yet myself, although a friend has the rules, it just seems to be taking of really well and I hear good things about it. But like you say it's difficult to find time for another game system. Envious of your sculpting skills, thosegang member's look great.

The coach look beyond great! Hexwraith horses improve it very much. It's nice to have it openable - is it magnetized? The limited palette works great for it

Also, nice work on sculpting! Yusuf surely has a chiseled physique xD At this point his turban looks a bit like anime spiky hair ;) Blood sisters look promising, I wonder which head will you use for them.

Must have forgotten to reply here.

@Nikos: I might have to look into it. Projects completely detached from all of my other games can be quite freeing and refreshing.

@Borgnine: Thanks for the kind words. It is not magnetized, the roof, the lid and even the coffin is just held in place by... well nothing. Kind of regretting not adding magnets. Might have to do something about it. The turban looks better IRL, and hopefully the paintjob can remove the anime feel to it.

@Farmer7574: Thanks for comment :)
The vampire's skin was quite simple. Basecoat with a light grey, washed with the purple GW Shade, re-highlighted with the grey. Shaded with the same shade, painted where I want it. And finally highlighted with white.

@robtion: Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you liked it. Have to ask, which embellishments do you refer to? Or are they so subtle that I didn't notice them myself?

Got a small update also. Below you'll find two pictures I took of the warband's leader, Hashepsut, right before priming her and Zaahir. Gonna start painting them this week ^^

Hopefully I'll be able to update again soon with pictures of painted models.

I think I may try some of the highlighting you did on your vamp to see if I can dim the purpleness of my Mannfred.

Coach looks awesome and your sculpting skills definitely make me envious.

@Mnemloch: Thanks for the kind words. You are most welcome to be inspired by my paintscheme =)

@Borgnine & @der vued: Beltbuckles indeed. Added them to make her look a bit more rag tag, as is fitting for Mordheim. It has become somewhat of a speciality of mine. The first ones were on the big armoured Vampire Lord converted from Goreshade the Bastard. Those took a lot of tinkering to get the way I wanted. Now I can make them relatively easy. First session I form the belt and push out the rectangular shape of the buckle from the belt itself, then add the loose end of the belt hanging out of it, finish by poking the holes in the belt. In the second session I add the pin poking out of the hole inside the buckle.

@robtion: Oh, I see. I had to google the word I admit and the results confused me cause all I got up was intricate patterns, and I've added nothing like that :P
But thanks, my intention with the horse swap was really to just improve the least interesting part of the coach. The model itself is great by the horses are a bit lacking as they are. Love the head decorations though so those had to be added to the new horses.
It is a really nice mini. Think you could still get your hands on it on ebay if you'd like ;)

@robtion: We just seem to be confusing each other more and more. The mini I was referring to that you could get on ebay was the Lahmia Vampire
Though nice to hear you have a Black Coach. I would be very interested to see what you could come up with with that model.

The Opposite of Bird is referring to my holiday habits. I tend to travel to colder latitudes whenever I get the chance, while birds go for warmer. Had that one for quite a while though so it might be time to change into something new, and change the avatar at the same time seeing as Christmas has long since passed =P

@Mad 'At Yes, seems that way, I am confused easily these days though. Nobody told me about the extreme, long-term, sleep deprivation involved in becoming a parent. Now I understand though. Yes the Vampiress is also a classic model. Perhaps yours will inspire me to pick it up when finished.

Also, perhaps my fish theory is not so far off.
Fish migrating to cooler water, study says!!!

Time for an update!

I managed to finish painting the Blood Servant last week, sadly not the Vampire though (just a few bits and pieces left to do). But here he is, Yusuf Zaahir Abd al-Hamid:

Just for fun, I've used parts from 6 different kits on this model, can anyone identify all of them?

Next we have the Beloved Knight Aspirant, Sir Gaël Dubois. I finished painting him two weeks ago but haven't had an opportunity to take pictures until now.

And finally we have a new hero under construction. This is a Blood Slave (henchmen) that rolled a 10-12 of his Advancement Roll so became a hero. Wanted a new model to represent him as I want a clear distinction between heroes and henchmen. I have not decided on a name yet, but it will probably be something German sounding (or Sonnstahl sounding if you will). He's even participated in a battle as a hero already, and got taken Out of Action. On the injury chart I rolled up that he got blinded on one eye (interesting injury seeing as he was taken OOA by a crossbow bolt 0.0), and therefore I sculpted a scar on his right eye. Hopefully the painting will demonstrate that better.

He is just about ready for primer. Might add a few more details to him still.

That's all for now, feel free to comment and criticize =)

I love your work on Yusuf! Green robes fit him wonderfully - and I like how these are different shades of green, but they still work together well. I thought that maybe some other clothes than just his sash would benefit from some freehand ornamentation, but leaving it as it is, is probably better - he's not a nobleman to warrant such extravagance and right now it's a good focal point for the mini  Sir Gaël also looks cool, very much bretonnian.

I am also most fascinated in this kind of emergent history as you shown on the imperial - dudes being promoted, getting scars! Awsome! If there was someone to play and I didn't have so much other projects on my plate, I would definitely look into playing Mordheim xD

@Borgnine: Glad you liked it =)

I worked quite a lot with limited colour palettes lately, and I consider Yusuf my most successful so far. Never even occurred to me that I could have done freehanding on other parts than the sash :P But I guess that could easily have been a bit over the top considering the moderate status of the group, as you said.

Th game is really fantastic, but it does demand a surprising amount of engagement from the players, especially when you consider the terrain. I can really recommend it if you do find some people to play it with, and would be happy to share our modified ruleset if you'd interested. I'd sure be really interested to see you come up with a warband, your paintstyle definitely suits the grim nature of Mordheim.
