The age old discussion must be started again.

Why did you not collect the other Undead?

So why did you not go for huge undead monsters, shooting and regiments of chariots and instead for zombies, vampires and black knights?

Why didn't you choose for the ones seeing Nagash' creation as damnation, and instead for the ones who see Nagash' creation as a blessing?

Because when I looked at the Sphinx model I thought it looked cool. When I looked at the ME I literally got an erection that my pants could barely contain.

What self-respecting Undead society would worship the sun god? Egypt, man, you were cool. You are still the biggest Death Cult the world has ever known. Nothing but love and respect, homies. But the sun worship?

Sorry. I prefer my Undead gorged on blood, not beef jerkyed by age. And they curse the sun with a hatred that has seen thousands of nights without it.

I just got back into WFB and have never done a true bad guy army before. And for some reason the Vampire army always lured me in and so I finally decided to do it! TK are just mummies and reminds me of the movie the Mummy. Also Vampire Counts remind of me the game Heroes of Might and Magic 2 the Undead faction was awesome and the two totally resemble each other!

Ooh I haven't replied to this yet...

VC vs TK: why did you go for the Vampires?

I didn't. My main army are still the TK because I feel like they are more original, have more awesome fluff and have better-looking models. The whole concept of Tomb Kings expecting a return into a Golden Life but being betrayed by that Nagash scumbag is just too cool to pass up. And really the whole feel of the TK still retaining skill and discipline, and loyalty to their commander is a lot more attractive to me than mindless zombies freshly risen from their grave. Just imagine a silent march, no sound being made other than the sound of bone on earth and steel. Yet you know death is upon you. EPIC! I think what really got me into them though, is also their models (particularly the Ushabti (best models in the game) and the Skeleton Chariots).

The VC just came as a natural expansion into my obsession with the undead... :mummy: But I do like their Blood Dragon theme though (while I think the concept of Liche Priests and Tomb Kings is still better. Traitor amidst us! ;)). The VC also have nice models for sure, for example the Blood Knights, but who would pay their outrageous price (I know you can convert them, but then they aren't the BK models anymore)?

Still, I do love my VC (if not as much as my TK) and I will continue to play them forever... Being Undead makes "forever" a lot longer than you think...

For me, it was seeing the Grave Guard and Blood Dragon units come out a few years back. They looked simply awesome. After that I started checking out the army book, reading the fluff etc. I like that these are 'proper' vampires - predators, monsters, amoral immortals - with their own agenda and lust for power. Moreover the fluff and the bloodlines allows for a huge wealth of conversions and fantasy-fiction.

Also, I played Chaos and only Chaos, so leaving behind an elite army of few models whose only real phase's were movement/combat, and usually, quite predictable (I love Chaos still, but lets face it, there's not a huge wealth of tactical options) and then playing with an army of tar pits, various units with different roles and so on, made for a more complete gaming experience.

So overall, I fell in love with the models first, the fiction second and the gaming style third, but it was the fiction that truly captured me. The models are great, but it's the supporting stories that really make VC - for me - so interesting.

I actually got into WFB because a friend let me test run his TK. Comparing the infantry and calvary, I prefered the VC. And then the monsters. I wasn't fond of living statues and I couldn't see a reason for models like the necrosphinx to look the way they do. Plus, TK seemed like they weren't good or evil. And I hate when people that waffle like that!

My original plan was to collect Tomb Kings. I like the Egyptian thing and I had a stupid idea in my head: to buy a 1920s explorer paint it like Brenden Fraser and having him in front of my army at all times running.

Then I played some games with proxies and saw VC did better than TK at least between me and my friends. Now I'm pursuing my project to make Lustrian undead and it's a blast. When you are making a zombie conversion there is no such thing as "oops" just simply "look at the brilliant post-mortem damage!"

I have always loved the Undead, vampires, and ancient Egyptian history so it was a really hard decision for me. I started playing warhammer right after the new vampire counts book came out. A lot of people told me to play vampires because it was a new book so while learning the game I would have the same learning curve as people trying to figure out how to play against them. Also everyone was really afraid of the ethereal creatures. I really liked the giant animated constructs, the chariots and Egyptian snake like creatures the tomb kings had. I liked that the vampire counts had a wide variety of what you could bring to the table. But when it really came down to it I chose vampires for the monsters, mainly the terrorgheist. Every time i walked into a gw to decide my eyes automatically went to the terrorgheist. I really like the look of the model. So.... Basically the terrorgheist made my decision.

I'm really into gothic stuff like HP Lovecraft, Dracula, walking in graveyards, always wearing black and wearing dark glasses. Also I used to be a fan of Warcraft but I got bored of that, however the image of Death Knights and the fall of Lordaeron stuck with me.

Then I saw the Blood Knight models and I knew I had to get some. I originally intended on doing them simply as a painting project but I decided, after reading the rules for VC, that I wanted to do a deathstar army featuring an order of dark, vampiric knights and their leader, a fallen baron, who seek revenge upon the world.

This is another thing I really like about Vamps - the book is so rich and there is so much room for creativity and for me to make my own little story, places and characters within the Warhammer world.

Why not tomb kings? I don't really like the Egyptian theme, or the fact that they are all skeletons, bar none.

In fact I like both factions, but when thinking what to choose if to, than it's VC.
Why?
Middle Age-like skeletons, Wight Kings, greatly looking Vampires clad in black and red armour.
Blood Knights.
And that gothic stuff, as it was posted above, as well.

And not that more archaic looking as for TK, though their Sphinxes are great too.

Smth like that, I suppose.

I never really considered the Tomb Kings. What I like about the Vampire Counts is how different they are from my Lizardmen: hordes of weak rank-and-file undead rather than medium-sized blocks of highly skilled (each in their own way) Skinks and Saurus, spending my points on characters rather than elite units, a totally different aesthetic, and - of course - some bad guys.

But not just any bad guys. I like that in a world of gods and monsters, the Vampire Counts are ultimately a very human evil. They don't want to destroy the world, they just want to rule it. They - the Von Carsteins, anyway - actually want to take good care of the humans to make sure that they have a reliable source of food. An Empire ruled by the Vampires wouldn't be that bad a place - it wouldn't be great, mind you, but life would go on.

And then there's the anti-hero side. When Chaos came, the Vampires joined with the Empire to push it back. Because, I mean, they like the world. It's where they keep all their stuff. They can't let some four pushy gods come in and take over!

A lot of that could be said of the Tomb Kings as well, however. They're human(ish), they have some antihero potential, they rely on hordes backed up by heroes, and their aesthetic is unique and nifty.

I think it's the aesthetic that really did it for me. Egyptian stuff is ok, I guess, but there was something really neat about the rotten gothic grandeur of the Vampire Counts. My Lizardmen have bright colors, shining gold everywhere. My Vampires are going to be bi-tone, grim, with the dark chivraldic excellence of the heroes contrasting with the horrible gribblyiness of the hordes.

I Began playing Fantasy with High elves, and I still Really love the army, But I wanted to see what another army would feel like (And it was a nice perk to not hear "UGH MORE HIGH ELVES" before every game). And one of the motives fueling my HE decision was Lore, and Vampires have some REALLY cool lore. Plus the Idea of a vampire general is just too cool.

I was originally going to play Vamps but ended up with HE as another guy at the club played them. Now I'm starting the army I wanted to go with first and I love it (I also love my HE). I guess I like all the vampire mythos and lore, GW and non-GW.

Well, it was actually a close one, but then I got (FINALLY) skyrim and fell in love again with the creatures of the night. And now there is actually more beast like vampires so its awesome. (Also I love more the spectral part than the bone part of the VC armies ^^)

For a LOT of reasons.
One is that, of course, Vampires out-fluff TK. I like the Tomb Kings lore and background, but VC's is just so much cooler!

Another is the models and the possibilities you have with them. For example, your zombies don't have to be just human zombies, or the ones supplied in the box set. Grab some Elves or Orcs & Goblins and make 'em look dead enough and voila, diversity in your dead.

Vampires have had so much more customisability as well with Vampiric powers AND magic weapons, like way back when we had the option of actually going down a bloodline. THAT was fantastic.

I adore gore and all undead things so obviously the army was just perfect for me (and some certain new paints make me salivate a lot).

We can use tactics that no other army, including TK (to my knowledge) can use. "Hm, I lost a few guys. You know what? Just for that I'm going to bring them all back to 'life' and then raise a unit of zombies or skeletons RIGHT BEHIND YOU!"

Terrorgheists.

Yeah, just all round fantastic-ness.

I played tomb kings a while back but didn't get the same feeling as when I played the vampires, I feel that the vampires have pure personality as the vampires are the most important aspects of the army in my opinion. So giving them a bloodline, magic weapons and even further customisation through vampire powers I feel that you create a vampire that people like to face because of their character and back story.

Plus if the opponents haven't played against vampires before or not many times then they are shocked by the amount of tricks they can pull out of their hat.

Why did i choose VC;

Vampires are so much more interesting than regular undead.
Ive always loved vampire stories and i especially like the Warhammer fluff about Vampires raising massive armies of undeads. In WHFB they are actually true lords instead of a petty conniving community that is mostly solitary or amongst their own species.

In whfb they are strong individual characters with each their own different heritage and abilities. They represent an aristocratic society, which brings them closer to the human realm than the Ushabti.
I love this dark, grimy, desolate fluff they have. a truly terrifying and gloomy and unpolished experience.

Furthermore when i started VC i thought it would be nice to have a race that was highly dependant on their magic (i had no clue what it would imply gamewise), raising the dead back and even increasing beyond starting size. I heard about this and thought 'wow, thats what i want'. Little did i know that VC pretty much sucks at magic and that the theory works alot better than the actual gamingexperience. But that aside, i do still enjoy playing VC even if i often have really bad magic phases, which ultimately often result in a loss or a draw against the races that have more magic proficiency or units that simply butcher ours.

I mainly chose VC instead of TK for the fluff and the gothic looks, it appealed to me more than what Tomb Kings offer.

I have always been fond of anything horror related. I love horror punk/ psychobilly. I grew up watching excellent horror flicks (Nosferatu is still my favorite vampire film) and generally delight in the macabre.

When I started playing Warhammer in 2008 I started with Dwarfs. I love the dwarfs but realized I needed a touch of the darkness in my gaming. It also turns out that their play style is polar opposite of the Dwarfs which excited me!

The Vampire Counts models are so great and the fluff is a fun read. Painting is a blast too.

I really like most of the Tomb King range. They have a great aesthetic and look as if they'd make a very unified army. They also seem to have a better spread of unit types with their archers and catapults. If there book was stronger I think you could make a very cool combined arms force. The fluff is great.

However, there's just something about the Vampire Counts. Hordes of mindless, shambling undead, accompanied by spirits and wights, flanked by horrific monsters and led by a small number of powerful personalities. Not to mention you have immense freedom with the backstory of any vampire characters and can use almost any human looking model as a vampire given a pale paint scheme.

I picked Tomb Kings initially because I found their theme, lore, and model range much more compelling. VC felt too "generic gothic horror" for my tastes. I also liked that they were magic-heavy. My concept for the army was a legion of skeletons advancing before a hail of artillery fire and magical assault.

That said, after playing the army for a year and a bit I've found them to be horrifyingly boring and static. The only good thing about the army is the magic phase and the artillery, and everything else in the army exists to protect those. I might as well be playing dwarfs.

So now I'm doing a TK-themed VC army and am enjoying the best of both words :D The funniest part is that my initial concept (a regimented legion of skeletons) is actually done much better by VC than by TK. Yeah TK can have WS5 skeletons, but not in a competitive list and not more than one unit. M4 no marching just makes it too hard to get your enemies to engage you.
